1962 Dallas Texans Season
The 1962 Dallas Texans season was the third and final season of Lamar Hunt's American Football League (AFL) franchise before its relocation to Kansas City from Dallas. The Texans won their first AFL championship (and only title in Dallas) when they defeated their intrastate rivals, the two-time defending champion Houston Oilers, 20–17 in double overtime—a game which now stands as the second longest game in pro football history and the longest in AFL history. Coach Hank Stram was named the AFL Coach of the Year and RB Curtis McClinton (Kansas) was named AFL Rookie of the Year. American Football League
The American Football League (AFL) was a major professional American football league that operated for ten seasons from 1960 until 1970, when it merged with the older National Football League (NFL), and became the American Football Conference. The upstart AFL operated in direct competition with the more established NFL throughout its existence. It was more successful than earlier rivals to the NFL with the same name, the 1926, 1936 and 1940 leagues, and the later All-America Football Conference (which existed between 1944 and 1950 but only played between 1946 and 1949). Melvin Leroy Branch (February 15, 1937 – April 21, 1992) was a college and professional American football defensive end for the Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins in the American Football League (AFL). He was a member of the " Chinese Bandits" defense for the national championship winning 1958 LSU Tigers football team, and a starter for the Texans in their victory over the Houston Oilers in the longest professional football game played up to that time, the 1962 AFL Championship Game. Charles Hinton (American Football)
Charles Howard Hinton (1853 – 30 April 1907) was a British mathematician and writer of science fiction works titled ''Scientific Romances''. He was interested in higher dimensions, particularly the fourth dimension. He is known for coining the word " tesseract" and for his work on methods of visualising the geometry of higher dimensions. Life Hinton's father, James Hinton, was a surgeon and advocate of polygamy. Charles Hinton was born in the United Kingdom. His siblings included the costume designer Ada Nettleship (1856 – 1932). Hinton taught at Cheltenham College while he studied at Balliol College, Oxford, where he obtained his B.A. in 1877. From 1880 to 1886, he taught at Uppingham School in Rutland, where Howard Candler, a friend of Edwin Abbott Abbott's, also taught. Hinton also received his M.A. from Oxford in 1886. Bill Miller (wide Receiver)
William Joseph Miller (born April 17, 1940) is a former professional American football wide receiver in the American Football League (AFL). He played six seasons for the Dallas Texans (1962), the Buffalo Bills (1963), and the Oakland Raiders (1964–1968). He is currently retired and living in St. Augustine, Florida. Career Miller played in 66 games in his career, garnering 141 receptions for 1,879 yards and 10 touchdowns. In five career playoff games, he caught 9 passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns. Miller was 4th in receptions in 1963 with 69 catches, while being 7th in receiving yards with 860 and 8th in receiving yards per game at 61.4. He was named to the 2nd Team in the All-AFL level by the Associated Press that year. Miller caught two touchdown passes in Super Bowl II, the only scores from quarterback Daryle Lamonica in the Oakland Raiders' 33-14 loss to the Green Bay Packers that day in 1968. Ronnie Bull (American Football)
Ronald David Bull (born February 2, 1940) is a retired American football running back. He played running back at Bishop High School in Bishop, Texas. Bull played halfback at Baylor University. While at Baylor he played at the Gator Bowl against the University of Florida. He also played in the East–West Shrine Game, the Senior Bowl, and the College All-Star Game. Bull was drafted in the 1962 American Football League Draft by the Dallas Texans with the team's first pick, but elected to play for the National Football League instead. Bull was taken out of the Baylor University by the Chicago Bears as the seventh pick in the first round in the 1962 NFL Draft. During his career, Bull played in 123 games, carried the ball 881 times for 3,222 yards and 9 touchdowns. 1962 American Football League Season
The 1962 American Football League season was the third regular season of the AFL. It consisted of 8 franchises split into two divisions: the East Division (Buffalo Bills, Houston Oilers, Titans of New York, Boston Patriots) and the West Division ( San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, Dallas Texans, Oakland Raiders). The season ended when the Texans defeated the Houston Oilers in the AFL Championship game. Division races The AFL had 8 teams, grouped into two divisions.
