1961 NBA Expansion Draft
The 1961 NBA Expansion Draft was the inaugural expansion draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The draft was held on April 26, 1961, so that the newly founded Chicago Packers could acquire players for the upcoming 1961–62 season. The Packers were the second NBA team from Chicago, after the Chicago Stags, which folded in 1950. The Packers later underwent several name changes and relocations before moving to Washington, D.C.. They are currently known as the Washington Wizards. In an NBA expansion draft, new NBA teams are allowed to acquire players from the previously established teams in the league. Not all players on a given team are available during an expansion draft, since each team can protect a certain number of players from being selected. The 1966 NBA Expansion Draft was the second expansion draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The draft was held from April 30 to May 1, 1966, so that the newly founded Chicago Bulls could acquire players for the upcoming 1966–67 season. Chicago had been awarded the expansion team on January 16, 1966. The Bulls were the third NBA franchise to play in Chicago, following the Chicago Stags, which folded in 1950, and the Chicago Packers–Zephyrs, which moved to Baltimore and became the Baltimore Bullets in 1963. Sihugo "Si" Green (August 20, 1933 – October 4, 1980) was an American professional basketball player. William Robert "Slick" Leonard (July 17, 1932April 13, 2021) was an American professional basketball player, coach and color commentator. He played college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers, where he was a two-time All-American and a member of their national championship squad in 1953. Robert J. McNeill (born October 22, 1938) is an American former professional basketball player. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1960 to 1962. McNeill was born near 2nd & Allegheny in the Kensington section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a senior at North Catholic High School, McNeill once scored 46 points in a game, which is an all-time school record. He was selected as a 1st team All-Catholic player in 1956. As the team's point guard, McNeill led the 1956 Falcons basketball team to a Philadelphia Catholic League Championship, scoring 14 points in a one-point victory over La Salle. Charles E. Tyra ( ; August 16, 1935 – December 29, 2006) was an American basketball player who is best known as the first Louisville Cardinal All-American. He played five seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the New York Knicks and Chicago Packers.
