1958 NAIA World Series
The 1958 NAIA World Series was the second annual tournament hosted by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics to determine the national champion of baseball among its member colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. The tournament was played at Kokernot Field in Alpine, Texas, near the campus of Sul Ross State College. San Diego State defeated Southwestern State (OK) in the championship game, 23–9, to win the Aztecs' first NAIA World Series. Sul Ross State player Al Miranda, meanwhile, was named tournament MVP. The tournament field increased by four teams from the inaugural event, growing from eight to twelve teams. A single-elimination knockout, or sudden-death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of a match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Each winner will play another in the next round, until the final match-up, whose winner becomes the tournament champion(s). Some match-ups may be a single match or several, for example two-legged ties in European sports or best-of series in North American pro sports. Defeated competitors may play no further part after losing, or may participate in "consolation" or "classification" matches against other losers to determine the lower final rankings; for example, a third place playoff between losing semi-finalists. The points of the compass are a set of horizontal, radially arrayed compass directions (or azimuths) used in navigation and cartography. 1958 NCAA University Division Baseball Tournament
The 1958 NCAA University Division baseball tournament was played at the end of the 1958 NCAA University Division baseball season to determine the national champion of college baseball. The tournament concluded with eight teams competing in the College World Series, a double-elimination tournament in its twelfth year. Eight regional districts sent representatives to the College World Series with preliminary rounds within each district serving to determine each representative. These events would later become known as regionals. Each district had its own format for selecting teams, resulting in 26 teams participating in the tournament at the conclusion of their regular season, and in some cases, after a conference tournament. The Creighton Bluejays baseball team represents the Creighton University in NCAA Division I college baseball, and competes as a member of the Big East Conference. Home games are played off campus at nearby Charles Schwab Field Omaha, which annually hosts the College World Series in June. The Bluejays played their first Big East baseball season in 2014, and are led by head coach Mark Kingston. As the official host school for the College World Series (CWS), Creighton provides each of the eight participating programs with practice facilities, training assistance, and assists with game scoring. Simpson College is a private Methodist college in Indianola, Iowa. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and enrolled 1,151 students in fall 2022.
