American Football

Jim Steffen
James William Steffen (May 1, 1936 – April 23, 2015) was an American football defensive back in the National Football League (NFL) for the Detroit Lions, Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys. He was drafted in the thirteenth round of the 1959 NFL draft. He played college football at the University of California, Los Angeles. Early life Steffen attended Tustin High School and graduated in 1954. He was an All-State selection in football, baseball and basketball. He initially enrolled at Occidental College to play football. He transferred to Santa Ana College after his freshman season, where he played basketball and baseball. He then moved on to Orange Coast College, where he played baseball. Steffen finally transferred to UCLA in 1956. After sitting out for a year, he walked on to the football team as a junior. The 1958 College Football All-America team is composed of college football players who were selected as All-Americans by various organizations and writers that chose College Football All-America Teams in 1958. The six selectors recognized by the NCAA as "official" for the 1958 season are (1) the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), (2) the Associated Press (AP), (3) the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), (4) the Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA), (5) the ''Sporting News'', and (6) the United Press International (UPI). Bob Grottkau
Robert Fred Grottkau (born March 22, 1937) is an American former professional football player who was a guard in the National Football League (NFL) for the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys. He played college football for the Oregon Ducks and was selected by the Lions in the fourth round of the 1959 NFL draft. Early life Grottkau attended Oakland High School where he played as a fullback. He accepted a scholarship from the University of Oregon. As a sophomore, he was switched to offensive tackle. The next year, he was moved to guard out of necessity and became a two-year starter. William Francis Leeka (born January 18, 1938) is a former American football player. Leeka was born in 1938 in Los Angeles County, California, and attended Alhambra High School. He played college football at the tackle position for the UCLA Bruins football team from 1956 to 1958. He was selected by ''Time'' magazine as a first-team end on its 1958 All-America college football team. He also received All-Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) honors in both 1957 and 1958. Ted Bates (American Football)
Ted Douglas Bates (September 22, 1936 – April 17, 2021) was an American football linebacker. He played in the National Football League (NFL) from 1959 to 1963. He played college football at Oregon State University and was drafted in the fifth round of the 1959 NFL draft by the Chicago Cardinals (NFL, 1920–59), Chicago Cardinals. He played for the Cardinals for four seasons and played for the New York Jets his final season. Bates died in West Covina, California on April 17, 2021, at the age of 84. William Steiger (born c. 1933) was an American football player. He grew up in Olympia, Washington, and attended Washington State University. He played college football at the end position in 1955, 1956, and 1958 for the Washington State Cougars football team. As a junior in 1956, he was the second leading receiver in the country in 1956 with 39 catches for 609 yards. Richard Lee Bass (March 15, 1937 – February 1, 2006) was an American professional football player who was a fullback for the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League (NFL) from 1960 to 1969. He played college football for the Pacific Tigers. Early life and education Born in Georgetown, Mississippi, in 1937, Bass moved as a youth with his family in the Great Migration to California, where they settled in Vallejo. The 1958 college football season was the 90th season of intercollegiate football in the United States. It concluded with two teams having claim to the major college national championship: * LSU compiled an 11–0 record, defeated Clemson in the Sugar Bowl, and was ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press (AP) writers and United Press International (UPI) coaches polls.
