1957 Syracuse Grand Prix
The 7th Syracuse Grand Prix was a motor race, run to Formula One rules, held on 7 April 1957 at Syracuse Circuit, Sicily. The race was run over 80 laps of the circuit, and was won by British driver Peter Collins in a Ferrari 801, who also took pole position. Stirling Moss, driving a Vanwall, set fastest lap. Connaught Type B
The Connaught Type B was a racing car made by Connaught Engineering of England used in Formula One racing between 1955 and 1958. Although not a success in the Formula One World Championship, it became the first British car since 1924 to win a Continental European motor race when Tony Brooks won the non-championship 1955 Syracuse Grand Prix. Development history Connaught had intended to build a streamlined Grand Prix car based around the 2.5-litre Coventry Climax FPE 'Godiva' engine. When that project was abandoned, Connaught instead switched to using the Alta straight 4 engine. The streamliner design was rejected as impractical, the drivers complaining of similar problems to that of the Mercedes-Benz W196 streamliner, in that they were unable to place the car accurately at the apex of bends. Tony Brooks (racing Driver)
Charles Anthony Standish "Tony" Brooks (25 February 1932 – 3 May 2022) was a British racing driver, who competed in Formula One from to . Nicknamed "The Racing Dentist", Brooks was runner-up in the Formula One World Drivers' Championship in with Ferrari and Vanwall, and won six Grands Prix across six seasons. Born and raised in Dukinfield, Brooks was the son of a dental surgeon. He began racing in 1952, driving sportscars at club events until he progressed to Formula Two. Brooks debuted in Formula One machinery at the non-championship 1955 Syracuse Grand Prix with Connaught, scoring the first win by a British driver in a British car in Grand Prix motor racing since 1923. Jack Fairman
John Eric George "Jack" Fairman (15 March 1913 – 7 February 2002) was a British racing driver from England. He participated in 13 Formula One Grands Prix, making his debut on 18 July 1953. He scored a total of five championship points, all of which came in the 1956 season. Career summary Fairman was born in Horley, and was only an occasional racing driver, his main source of income coming from running the family precision tool manufacturing company. He got his first taste of motorsport before World War II, driving an Alvis 12/50 in trials and hill climb events from 1934. He quickly moved on to races at the Brooklands circuit, but the war intervened and he spent the duration on active service in the Tank Corps. Hans Herrmann
Hans Herrmann (born 23 February 1928) is a retired Formula One and sports car racing driver from Stuttgart, Germany. In F1, he participated in 19 World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 2 August 1953. He achieved one podium, and scored a total of 10 championship points. In sports car racing, he also scored the first overall win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Porsche in 1970, in a Porsche 917. After the death of Tony Brooks in 2022, Hermann became the last surviving F1 podium finisher from the 1950s. Bill Whitehouse
William James Whitehouse (1 April 1909 in Plumstead – 14 July 1957 at Reims) was a British racing driver from England. Bill started racing in a Cooper 500 in 1949 in 500 cc Car Club National races (later Formula 3). Several wins and top placings followed and through this he became friends with fellow car dealer Bernie Ecclestone. He participated in one Formula One World Championship Grand Prix, on 17 July 1954. He retired from the race with fuel system problems, and scored no World Championship points. He also competed in several non-Championship Formula One races. The Cooper T43 was a Formula One and Formula Two racing car designed and built by Cooper Car Company for the 1957 Formula One season, first appearing at the 1957 Monaco Grand Prix in a works car for Jack Brabham. The T43 earned a significant place in motor racing history when Stirling Moss drove a Rob Walker Racing Team T43 to win the 1958 Argentine Grand Prix, the first World Drivers' Championship win for a mid-engined car. Peter Douglas Conyers Walker (7 October 1912 – 1 March 1984) was an English racing driver. He was born in Huby, Yorkshire and died in Newtown, Worcestershire. He proved a strong driver in most disciplines, but was most adept in sports cars, winning the 1951 24 Hours of Le Mans race, and the Goodwood Nine-Hours in 1955. He effectively retired after a crash in 1956 left him with serious injuries. Early life and pre-war racing Peter 'Skid' Walker was born in Yorkshire in October 1912. Coventry Climax was a British manufacturer of forklift trucks, fire pumps, racing engines, and other speciality engines. History Pre WWI The company was started in 1903 as Lee Stroyer, a joint venture by Jens Stroyer and Pelham Lee.
