1955 Nauruan Local Government Council Election
Elections for the Local Government Council were held in Nauru on 10 December 1955.Nancy Viviani (1970) ''Nauru: Phosphate and Political Progress'' Australian National University Press, p107 Background Since the first elections in 1951, the Local Government Council had gained more powers as in 1954 it had been given full access to the Nauru Royalty Trust Fund in order to pay for education. Electoral system The fourteen districts of Nauru were grouped into eight constituencies. Seven constituencies elected one member, whilst one elected two.Viviani, p105 The election was held under universal suffrage and any eligible voter could stand as a candidate. A total of 39 candidates stood in the election, an increase from 21 in the first elections. Results Of the 832 registered voters, 803 cast votes of which 14 were invalid. Austin Bernicke
Austin Bernicke (died 13 January 1977) was a Nauruan politician. He was a member of the first Local Government Council in 1951, then a member of Parliament after it was established in 1966, serving until his death in 1977. He also served as a cabinet minister from 1968 until 1976. Biography Bernicke was a member of the Eamwitmwit tribe. He became the first Nauruan to attend university when he began studying medicine at Queen's College at the University of Melbourne. He returned to Nauru to work as a pathologist, later becoming superintendent of Nauru Hospital. Boe District
Boe is a district in the country of Nauru. It is the only district of Boe Constituency. History On September 5, 2019, the Pacific Light House Church (Born Again Christian Church) was opened in the district. Geography Boe is located in the southwest of the island. It borders on the districts of Aiwo, Yaren along the coastline, and Buada inland. It covers an area of 0.5 km², and has a population of 950. Joseph Detsimea Audoa
Joseph Detsimea Audoa (26 December 1921 – 18 April 1984) was a Nauruan politician. He served as a member of the Parliament of Nauru and its predecessors from 1955 until his death and was a cabinet minister for much of the period 1968 to 1983. Biography Audoa was born in Nauru in December 1921, a member of the Deiboe tribe.''Pacific Islands Year Book and Who's who, Issue 10'', p529 He was educated at Nauru Primary School and then trained at the Commonwealth X-Ray and Radium Lab at the University of Melbourne. Returning to Nauru, he worked in the pathology department of Nauru Hospital from 1937 to 1942. Following the Japanese occupation, he was deported to Chuuk in 1942, where became the medical orderly for Nauruan deportees until 1945. He returned to Melbourne for a course in x-raying in 1950. It covers an area of 4.5 km² (1.73 mi²), making it the second largest constituency by area, and is the most populous constituency with a population of 3,300.
