1954 NFL Draft
The 1954 NFL draft was held on January 28, 1954, at The Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia. This was the eighth year that the first overall pick was a bonus pick determined by lottery. With the previous seven winners ineligible from the draw, only the Baltimore Colts, Chicago Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, and Pittsburgh Steelers had an equal chance of winning. The draft lottery was won by Cleveland, who selected quarterback Bobby Garrett. The Bellevue-Stratford Hotel
The Bellevue-Stratford Hotel is a landmark building at 200 S. Broad Street at the corner of Walnut Street in Center City Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Constructed in 1904 and expanded to its present size in 1912, it has continued as a well-known institution for more than a century and is still widely known by that original, historic name. In November 1976, the hotel closed following a lethal outbreak of pneumonia-like illness the previous summer. The outbreak, later traced to bacterial growth in the hotel's air-conditioning system, killed or sickened numerous guests who had attended an American Legion convention. Despite a subsequent change in ownership, renovations, and a brief rebranding before reopening in September 1979, the Bellevue-Stratford never recovered from the disaster, and the original incarnation of the hotel permanently closed in March 1986. Veryl A. Switzer (August 6, 1932 – June 4, 2022) was an American professional football player who was a halfback in the National Football League (NFL) and the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played in the NFL for 24 games with the Green Bay Packers before serving in the United States Air Force for two years, playing professional football in Canada, and becoming an administrator at his alma mater Kansas State where he is a hall of famer. The 1953 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team represented the University of Notre Dame as an independent during the 1953 college football season. Led by Frank Leahy in his 11th and final season as head coach, the Fighting Irish compiled a record of 9–0–1. Arthur Hunter (April 24, 1933 – December 25, 2009) was an American professional football player who was a tackle for 12 seasons in the National Football League (NFL), primarily for the Los Angeles Rams. Clarence Lamar McHan (December 16, 1932 – November 23, 1998) was an American football player and coach. He played professionally for ten seasons as a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL) for the Chicago Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Colts, and San Francisco 49ers.
