1952 Kenyan General Election
General elections were held in Kenya in 1952. Electoral system The number of European seats in the Legislative Council was increased from 11 to 14, with two new constituencies in the countryside and one in western Nairobi."Elections In Kenya: Inter-Racial Rivalries At The Hustings", ''The Times'', 7 June 1952, p7, Issue 52332 The number of Indian seats was increased from five to six, although two seats were allotted to Muslims at their request. All but one of the Indian candidates were running on behalf of the East African Indian National Congress, which supported a boycott of the Council in protest at the division of the Indian seats based on religion. The majority Black population was not entitled to vote, and instead six members (an increase from four) were appointed by the Governor from lists drawn up by local governments following hustings. Agnes Shaw
Agnes Ramsay Shaw (; 1903-1978), was an early European settler in Sotik in the West of Kenya. In 1951, she was selected as a European member on the Legislative Council of Kenya for the Nyanza seat and was the fourth woman to be appointed to that body and later became the last European woman to be elected to it. She sat for twelve years until Kenyan Independence in 1963, attending the Lancaster House Conferences (Kenya). Biography Born in Glasgow, Shaw arrived in Kenya in 1927. She married Brian Shaw in 1928 and they had two children Ann and Michael. When she came to Kenya, she became interested in politics and was a founder member of the Electors’ Union. In the 1952 Kenyan general election, Shaw defeated Noel Irwin by 632 votes to 317. Chunilal Madan
Chunilal Bhagwandas Madan QC (born Chunilal Bhagwandas Bhusri; 11 November 1912 – 22 September 1989) was a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Kenya. He served between 1985–1986 and was succeeded by Justice Cecil Henry Ethelwood Miller. Biography Madan was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1912. He studied at the Government Indian School before moving to London and enrolling at the Middle Temple. He was called to the Bar in London in 1935 and on his return to Kenya he was admitted as an Advocate of the High Court in 1936. He adopted the surname Madan in lieu of Bhusri in 1937. He was elected to the Nairobi Town Council between 1937 and 1948 and the Legislative Council between 1948 and 1961. In 1955, Madan was made Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry for Commerce and Industry and the following year he became Asian Minister without portfolio. Dorothy E. Shaw (1920–2007) was an Australian plant pathologist, best known for her work on coffee leaf rust (''Hemileia vastatrix'') and discovery of several species of fungi. In her 60-year career, Shaw studied plant pathogens in Australia, Canada and Papua New Guinea. The fungal genus '' Shawiella'' was named in her honour.
