1950 VFL Season
The 1950 VFL season was the 54th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 22 April until 23 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Essendon Football Club for the tenth time and second time consecutively, after it defeated by 38 points in the 1950 VFL Grand Final. John Coleman (Australian Footballer)
John Douglas Coleman (23 November 1928 – 5 April 1973) was an Australian rules footballer who played for and coached the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Coleman is widely regarded as one of the greatest-ever Australian rules footballers. In a relatively short playing career, Coleman has the second-highest goal average in the history of the VFL/AFL (with 5.48), kicking 537 goals in 98 matches; he is behind only Peter Hudson (with 5.64). As of 2023, they are the only VFL/AFL players to average more than five goals per game. He was also known for his high-flying spectacular marks, in some cases jumping cleanly over opponents. Princes Park Football Ground
Princes Park (also known as Ikon Park under naming rights) is an Australian rules football ground located inside the Princes Park precinct in the inner Melbourne suburb of Carlton North. Officially the Carlton Recreation Ground, it is a historic venue, having been Carlton Football Club's VFL/AFL home ground from 1897. AFL Grand Final
The AFL Grand Final is an Australian rules football match to determine the premiers for the Australian Football League (AFL) season. Prior to 1990 it was known as the VFL Grand Final, as the league was then known as the Victorian Football League, and both were renamed due to the national expansion of the competition. Played at the end of the finals series, the game has been held annually since 1898, except in 1924. It is traditionally staged on the afternoon of the last Saturday in September, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Syd Coventry
Sydney Alfred Coventry (13 June 1899 – 10 November 1976) was an Australian rules football player, coach and administrator. He played for Collingwood Football Club, Collingwood in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL) and also coached Western Bulldogs, Footscray in the VFL. In 1969, the Collingwood Football Club named the newly built social club stand at Victoria Park, Melbourne, Victoria Park the S. A. Coventry Pavilion. Bervyn Woods
Bervin Robert Woods (9 January 1910 – 13 January 2002) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1930s. Despite spending only six seasons at Collingwood, Woods played in five Grand Finals, all in succession from 1935 to 1939. These included premierships in 1935 and 1936. He was mostly a defender and could also play effectively in the ruck. Woods was involved in controversy in the 1950 VFL pre-season when he left his job as coach of Collingwood's reserves to replace the retired Jock McHale as senior coach. Phonse Kyne
Alphonsus Edward "Phonse" Kyne (29 October 1915 – 8 April 1985) was an Australian rules footballer who played for and coached Collingwood in the Victorian Football League. He is an inductee of the Australian Football Hall of Fame and a member of the official Collingwood Team of the Century. Along with Allan La Fontaine, he is widely regarded as one of the two best footballers to graduate from St Kevin's College, Toorak. Jock McHale
James Francis "Jock" McHale (12 December 1882 – 4 October 1953) was an Australian rules football player and coach for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League in a marathon career that extended from 1903 to 1949. He is the most successful VFL/AFL coach of all time, having lead Collingwood to a record eight premierships.
