The Campeonato Carioca (Carioca Championship), officially known as Campeonato Estadual do Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro State Championship), also commonly known as the Cariocão, is the top-flight professional state football league in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. It is run by the Rio de Janeiro State Football Federation (FERJ). The first season of the ''Campeonato Carioca'' was played in 1906. It was predated by the Campeonato Paulista of São Paulo and the Campeonato Baiano of Bahia. Manuel Marinho Alves, best known as ''Maneca'' (January 28, 1926 – July 14, 1961), was an association footballer in striker role. He was born in Salvador Bahia, Brazil. During his career (1943–1957) he played for GalÃcia, Vitória, Vasco da Gama and Bangu. He won four Rio de Janeiro State Championships (1947, 1949, 1950 and 1952) and the South American Club Championship of 1948. Santo Cristo (footballer)
Walter Goulart da Silveira (12 September 1922 – 30 August 2003), better known as Santo Cristo, was a Brazilian professional footballer who played as a right winger. Career Right winger, he was top scorer for most of the clubs he played for. At Vasco, he formed a great partnership alongside Manoel Pessanha. He was also state champion with São Paulo FC in 1948 and Atlético Mineiro in 1955. Personal life Walter received the nickname "Santo Cristo" for being born in the Santo Cristo, Rio de Janeiro. In 1943, he abandoned a flight from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro just minutes before boarding. The plane ended up crashing in Guanabara Bay, killing 18 people, including Cásper LÃbero, founder of the journal ''A Gazeta'', and Dom José Gaspar de Afonseca e Silva, archbishop of São Paulo.
