Despite their NBL success which included four championship series births and two titles the team wasn't able to translate that success to the new league and missed the playoffs for the first time in team history. Carl Bennett
Carl Blair Bennett (December 7, 1915 – May 15, 2013) was an American professional basketball general manager and head coach. He was born in Rockford, Indiana and began his sports career by playing softball. Bennett was recruited by Fred Zollner in 1938 to join his staff. He coached the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons of the National Basketball League (NBL) and then the Fort Wayne Pistons of the Basketball Association of America (BAA). for six games in 1948–49. Bennett became the franchise's general manager and served in that capacity from 1948 to 1954. Bennett endured a 15-year campaign to get Zollner inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, which occurred in 1999. Indianapolis Jets
The Indianapolis Jets were a Basketball Association of America (BAA) team based in Indianapolis. They were founded as the Indianapolis Kautskys and used that name until the team joined the BAA. They played for one year in the BAA and then ceased operations due to the formation of the Indianapolis Olympians. Franchise history In 1931, Frank Kautsky, an Indianapolis grocer, formed a professional basketball team and named it the Indianapolis Kautskys. Their first game they ever played was on November 24, 1931, which they won 37–18 against the Kokomo 66ers in Kokomo, Indiana. Their first home game would be on December 11, where they'd win 31–17 over the Fort Wayne Firemen. Jack Smiley
Arthur John Smiley (December 22, 1922 – July 30, 2000) was an American professional basketball player. Smiley played basketball for Waterman High School, in Waterman, Illinois. With Gene Vance, Andy Phillip, Ken Menke, and Art Mathisen, Smiley was a member of the University of Illinois' " Whiz Kids" team that went 35-6 from 1941 to 1943, earning two Big Ten Conference championships. The team voted to turn down an invitation to the NCAA tournament in 1943, after Smiley, Vance and Phillip were inducted into the military mid-season. As an artillery corporal with the Army's 106th division, Smiley was engaged in one of the bloodiest skirmishes of the Battle of the Bulge- once firing his 105 mm Howitzer for 96 continuous hours. Leo Anthony "Crystal" Klier (May 21, 1923 – June 4, 2005) was an American professional basketball player. Collegiate career Klier, a 6'2 guard/forward, played collegiately at Notre Dame after a standout high school career at Washington High School in Washington, Indiana. He played for the Fighting Irish from 1942 to 1946. Klier was named a consensus first-team All-American in 1944 as he notched Notre Dame's single-season scoring record (since broken). However, Klier missed the 1944–45 season as he served in the United States Navy during World War II. Klier returned and was again named a consensus first-team All-American in 1946. Richard Floyd Triptow Jr. (November 3, 1922 – February 20, 2015) was an American professional basketball player and coach. At 6'0" and 170 pounds, he played as a guard and a forward. Triptow attended Lane Tech High School and DePaul University, both in Chicago, Illinois.
