1948 United States Senate Election In New Jersey
The United States Senate election of 1948 in New Jersey was held on November 2, 1948. Incumbent Republican Senator Albert Hawkes did not seek re-election to a second term. Republican State Treasurer Robert C. Hendrickson defeated Princeton attorney Archibald S. Alexander in a close race. This remains the last senate election in which a resident of South Jersey with elected to the Senate. Robert Clymer Hendrickson
Robert Clymer Hendrickson (August 12, 1898December 7, 1964) was an American attorney, politician, and diplomat who served as a United States senator from New Jersey. Early life and education Born in Woodbury, New Jersey, Hendrickson attended public schools and during the First World War enlisted in the United States Army in 1918 and served overseas. Since he left for war before his senior year of high school ended, Hendrickson received his Woodbury High School diploma while he was overseas in France. He graduated from Temple University Law School in Philadelphia (1922). Career After graduating from law school, Hendrickson was admitted to the New Jersey bar, commencing practice in Woodbury. He held the office of county supervisor from 1929 to 1934, and was city solicitor of Woodbury in 1931. Harry Harper
Harry Clayton Harper (April 24, 1895 – April 23, 1963) was an American professional baseball pitcher, businessman, and politician. He played in Major League Baseball for the Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Brooklyn Robins between 1913 and 1923. Harper started Game 6 of the 1922 World Series for the Yankees. Harper was from Hackensack, New Jersey, and was often called "Hackensack Harry" during and after his baseball career. Harper invested his salaries in his business career while he was a baseball player. George Breitman
George Breitman (February 28, 1916 – April 19, 1986) was an American communist political activist and newspaper editor. He is best remembered as a founding member of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) and as a long-time editor of that organization's weekly paper, ''The Militant.'' 1948 United States Senate Elections
The 1948 United States Senate elections were elections which coincided with the election of Democratic President Harry S. Truman for a full term. Truman had campaigned against an "obstructionist" Congress that had blocked many of his initiatives, and in addition the U.S. economy recovered from the postwar recession of 1946–47 by election day. Thus Truman was rewarded with a Democratic gain of nine seats in the Senate, enough to give them control of the chamber.
