American Football
American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. The offense, the team with possession of the oval-shaped football, attempts to advance down the field by running with the ball or passing it, while the defense, the team without possession of the ball, aims to stop the offense's advance and to take control of the ball for themselves. The offense must advance at least ten yards in four downs or plays; if they fail, they turn over the football to the defense, but if they succeed, they are given a new set of four downs to continue the Glossary of American football#drive, drive. Les Bingaman
Lester Alonza "Bingo" Bingaman (February 3, 1926November 20, 1970) was an American football player and coach. He played college football at the University of Illinois from 1944 to 1947 and professional football in the National Football League for the Detroit Lions from 1948 to 1954. He earned trips to the Pro Bowl after the 1951 and 1953 seasons. He was also selected as a first-team All Pro player four consecutive years from 1951 to 1954. At times weighing as much as 350 pounds, Bingaman was the heaviest player in the NFL during his playing career. He later worked as an assistant coach for the Detroit Lions from 1960 to 1964 and for the Miami Dolphins from 1966 to 1969. Ollie Cline
Oliver Monroe Cline (December 31, 1925 – May 12, 2001) was a college and professional American football fullback who played for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions in the 1940s and 1950s. A standout high school athlete in his hometown of Fredericktown, Ohio, Cline attended Ohio State University starting in 1944. He became the football team's primary fullback that year as the school went unbeaten and was ranked second in the nation in the AP Poll. The following year, Cline was named the most valuable player in the Big Ten Conference, rushing for 936 yards as Ohio State built up a 7–2 record and was ranked 12th in the AP Poll. Following a brief stint in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II, Cline returned to Ohio State for a final season in 1947. Ed Cody
Edward Joseph "Catfoot" Cody (February 27, 1923 – October 16, 1994) was an American football player and coach. He played professionally in the National Football League (NFL). Biography Cody was born on February 27, 1923 in Newington, Connecticut.; and died on October 16, 1994. Career Cody played at the collegiate level at Purdue University and Boston College., before being drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 1946 NFL Draft. He played fullback with Packers in 1947 and 1948, before moving to the Chicago Bears where he played fullback and defensive back in 1949 and 1950. After retiring as a player, Cody went into coaching; he spent 4 seasons (1956-1959) as the head coach of the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. George Taliaferro
George Taliaferro (January 8, 1927 – October 8, 2018) was a professional American football player who was the first African American drafted by a National Football League (NFL) team. Beginning his football career at Indiana University for the Hoosiers team, he played in the NFL for the New York Yanks from 1950 to 1951, the Dallas Texans in 1952, the Baltimore Colts from 1953 to 1954, and Philadelphia Eagles in 1955. Joseph Ponsetto (March 29, 1926 – November 24, 2004) was an American football player who was the starting quarterback for the University of Michigan Wolverines football teams of 1944 and 1945. Playing under head coach Fritz Crisler, Ponsetto led the 1944 team to an 8–2 record and a #8 ranking in the final AP Poll. Pete Pihos
Peter Louis Pihos (; October 22, 1923August 16, 2011) was an American football player and coach. Pihos played college football, principally as an end and fullback, for Indiana University from 1942 to 1943 and 1945 to 1946. He was selected as a first-team All-American in 1942, 1943, and 1945. His college playing career was interrupted by service in the United States Army during World War II. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1966, the first Indiana player to be so honored. Harold M. Watts (1925 – August 15, 1973) was an American football player. He played at the center position for the University of Michigan from 1943 to 1946. He was chosen as the Most Valuable Player on the 1945 Michigan Wolverines football team and received the award ''in absentia'' after being transferred off the Michigan campus by the U.S. Navy and missing the final two games of the 1945 season. Warren Amling
Dr. Warren Eugene Amling (December 29, 1924 – November 1, 2001) was an American football and basketball player, playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 1944 to 1946. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1984. In 1945 Amling was a unanimous All-America selection at guard on the Buckeye football team and finished seventh in the vote for the Heisman Trophy In 1946 he was elected the team captain and volunteered to move to tackle, a position where the team was thinner. At this new position he was again named an All American by the ''Sporting News'' and the Football Writers Association of America.
