1944 UNAM Pumas American Football Team
The 1944 UNAM Pumas football team (also known as Pumas Doradoes) represented the National Autonomous University of Mexico, or UNAM, during the 1944 college football season. The Pumas were coached by Bernard A. Hoban, compiled a 4–1–1, and were invited to the 1945 Sun Bowl, where they were defeated by the Southwestern Pirates. 1945 Sun Bowl
The 1945 Sun Bowl was a postseason college football bowl game held at Kidd Field in El Paso, Texas, on January 1, 1945, with approximately 13,000 spectators in attendance. The game featured the 1944 Southwestern Pirates football team, Southwestern Pirates representing Southwestern University and the representing the 1944 UNAM Pumas American football team, National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). This game was the first time an American football bowl game has included a team from Mexico. The next time an American Division-1 college would play a Mexican opponent was the 2011 Kilimanjaro Bowl. 1944 College Football Season
The 1944 college football season was the 76th season of intercollegiate football in the United States. Competition included schools from the Big Ten Conference, the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC), the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the Big Six Conference, the Southern Conference, the Southwestern Conference, and numerous smaller conferences and independent programs. The season was played at the height of World War II, starting less than three months after the Normandy landings and as battles raged throughout Europe and the Pacific. As in 1943, the Associated Press poll included service teams, drawn from flight schools and training centers which were preparing men for fighting in the war. Half of the final top 20 teams were composed of service teams, in addition to the Army and Navy service academies. 2011 Kilimanjaro Bowl
The 2011 Global Kilimanjaro Bowl was the first college football game played on the continent of Africa. The game at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Memorial Stadium in Arusha, Tanzania was played in May 21, 2011, due to the seasonal difference in Africa, featuring Drake against Mexican All-Star team CONADEIP. It marked the first NCAA Division I bowl game versus a Mexican opponent since the 1945 Sun Bowl, and the first to be played after the BCS Championship Game. The title sponsor of the game was Global Football, along with counterpart sponsors Iowa Resource for International Service (IRIS), IRIS Youth Exchange & Study Program alumni from Tanzania, Tanapa Partners and Younger Optics. Kidd Field is an athletic facility used primarily by the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in El Paso, Texas. Constructed for its then-primary use as a football field in 1938, it was the site of the Sun Bowl until 1963 when Sun Bowl Stadium opened.
