1935 Philadelphia Mayoral Election
The 1935 Philadelphia mayoral election saw the election of Samuel Davis Wilson. Campaign Wilson was a strong candidate. He had strong persuasive abilities, being able to take opposing positions on a topic while still seeming sincere. For instance, Wilson, as a mayoral candidate, condemned "out of control" federal spending. However, once elected mayor, in 1936 he would later assist in guaranteeing that 40,000 of his constituents were on the Works Progress Administration payroll. Wilson was not completely loyal to the national Republican Party, as he had previously campaigned for Franklin Roosevelt in 1932. Wilson was prone to taking a bare-knuckle approach to political discourse, not straying from referring to his opponents by pejoratives as “dirty rats” and “bare-faced liars.” Having registered 179,000 new voters after the 1932 election cycle, Philadelphia Democrats hoped to finally take the mayoralty. Robert Eneas Lamberton
Robert Eneas Lamberton (September 14, 1886 – August 22, 1941) was an American Republican politician who served as the 114th mayor of Philadelphia from 1940 to 1941. He was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and ran an unsuccessful campaign for Pennsylvania Governor in 1934. He ran successfully for Philadelphia mayor in 1939 against Robert White, a Democrat, garnering 398,384 votes to White's 361,143. Lamberton suffered from Parkinson’s Disease and, died while recovering at his shore house in Longport, New Jersey on August 22, 1941. The City Council President Bernard Samuel succeeded him as mayor. George H. Connell (November 2, 1871 – October 22, 1955, Philadelphia) was a US Republican politician. He was a member of the Philadelphia City Council from 1913 to 1939 and was acting Mayor of Philadelphia in 1939. Biography Connell was born on November 2, 1939, in the Cobbs Creek section of Philadelphia. His father was Horatio P. Connell, who had served as Sheriff of Philadelphia. His grandfather, George Connell was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate whose accomplishments including pushing legislation for the creation of Fairmount Park and Mount Moriah Cemetery. A member of the Republican, he became active in Philadelphia politics and served as the Republican chair for the 40th ward in West Philadelphia.
