1938 VFL Season
The 1938 VFL season was the 42nd season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 23 April until 24 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Carlton Football Club for the sixth time, after it defeated by 15 points in the 1938 VFL Grand Final. Background In 1938, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, plus one substitute player, known as the 19th man. Ron Todd (footballer)
Ronald Walford Todd (23 October 1916 – 8 February 1991) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and the Williamstown Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Renowned for his high marking and goalkicking ability, Todd was considered as the logical successor to the legendary Gordon Coventry, but his controversial move to Williamstown, along with teammate and friend Des Fothergill, caused much bitterness at Collingwood for many years afterward. Princes Park (also known as Ikon Park under naming rights) is an Australian rules football ground located inside the Princes Park precinct in the inner Melbourne suburb of Carlton North. Jack Titus
Jack "Skinny" Titus (9 March 1908 – 19 April 1978) was an Australian rules football player who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL) between 1926 and 1943 for the Richmond Football Club. In the 1930s, Titus was one of the great forwards who regularly thrilled the crowds with his goalkicking feats. A lightly built player who seemed at first glance to be too frail for the robust game of Australian football, Titus proved to be one of the great survivors of the game as he set the record for durability (most consecutive games played) that remained unbeaten for nearly a century. Jack Carney (footballer)
John Richard William Carney (22 January 1909 – 31 October 1981) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong and Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1930s. Carney was a dashing wingman and started his league career with Geelong in 1930. Standing at just 160 cm he is the smallest player ever to represent Geelong and is said to have worn size three shoes. He was a member of Geelong's 1931 premiership side and played 79 games with the club before crossing to Carlton in 1936. He was a premiership player with Carlton in 1938 and a regular Victorian interstate representative. Harry Collier
Harry Collier (1 October 1907 – 16 August 1994) was an Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League. Playing career Originally from Ivanhoe, Victoria, Collier played for the Collingwood Football Club, debuting in 1926. Collier was a player in Collingwood's legendary premiership sides from 1927–1930, the only side to have won four premierships in a row in the entire history of the VFL/AFL. He was appointed captain in 1935, a position which he held until 1939. During this period, his team won two premierships (in 1935 and 1936), and finished runners-up in the other three years he was captain. The Stawell Gift is Australia's oldest and richest short-distance running race. It is the main event in an annual carnival held on Easter weekend by the Stawell Athletic Club, with the main race finals on the holiday Monday, at Central Park, Stawell, Victoria, Stawell in the Grampian Mountains (Australia), Grampian Mountains district of western Victoria. the carnival encompasses events for both men and women of all ages and abilities, across distances from 70 to 3,200 metres.
