Mahmut Atalay
Mahmut Atalay (30 March 1934 – 4 December 2004) was a Turkish freestyle wrestler and coach. He competed at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics and won a gold medal in 1968, placing fourth in 1964. Early life and wrestling career He was born in 1934 in Çorak, a village of Çorum Province in northern Turkey. He began wrestling in the traditional Turkish karakucak style before changing to freestyle wrestling. It was not until the age of 18 that he began Olympic wrestling in 1952. It took him a relatively long time to grow into the Turkish top class of freestyle wrestlers. It was not until the late 1950s, at the age of 25, that he was selected for the Turkish national wrestling team. He was admitted to the national team after winning the national title in 1959, and received training by the renowned wrestlers such as Yaşar Doğu, Celal Atik and Nasuh Akar and Halit Balamir. Zaro Aga
Zaro Aga (; ) was a Kurdish man who claimed to be one of the longest-living persons ever. He claimed birth on 16 February 1774 in Mutki, and died on 29 June 1934 in Istanbul, Turkey. He was allegedly aged 160 when he died, and thus claimed to be one of the longest-living persons ever. Debate There is ongoing debate as to his actual age when he died. According to the death certificate provided by his Turkish doctor, Zaro Aga's age was 157. He died in Istanbul, although some confusion about the place of death exists, likely due to the fact that the body was sent to the US right after his death. However, an investigative report published by Walter Bowerman in 1939 indicated that Zaro Aga was around 97, not 157. Kamal ad-Din (, ''Kamāl ad-Dīn'') is a male Muslim given name or surname (''laqab'' in Arabic), meaning "perfection of the religion" in Arabic. Reşit Galip
Mustafa Reşit Galip (1893 – 5 March 1934) was a Turkish politician in the early years of the Turkish Republic. By profession, he was a medical doctor. Early years He was born in the Sanjak of Rhodes (now an island of Greece, then a part of the Ottoman Empire) in 1883. His father was Galip, a judge and his mother was Münevver. He completed his elementary education in Rhodes. According to his granddaughter Feyhan Oran, when Rhodes was occupied by Italy he escaped to İzmir where he finished his highschool education. Then, he travelled to Istanbul to study medicine. During the Balkan War and the First World War he voluntarily served in the fronts. In 1917 he graduated from the medicine school of Istanbul University. Although he briefly served as an assistant in the faculty, he later on moved to Tavşanlı (a town in West Anatolia) to participate in the Turkish War of Independence. Hamit Kaplan
Hamit Kaplan (20 September 1934 – 5 January 1976) was a Turkish World and Olympic champion sports wrestler of Circassian descent in the Heavyweight class. He won the gold, silver and bronze medal in men's freestyle wrestling at three consecutive Olympic Games in 1956, 1960 and 1964. Born in Hamamözü town in Amasya Province, he began wrestling as a youngster in the traditional Turkish sport Yağlı güreş (oil wrestling). Soon, he switched over to sports wrestling and became juniors champion in the Heavyweight class. Hamit Kaplan was admitted to the national team in 1954 and was trained by the renowned wrestler Celal Atik for his skill. Ayla Erduran
Ayla Erduran (22 August 1934 – 7 January 2025) was a Turkish classical violinist. She studied in Istanbul, Paris, the US and Moscow. A fifth place prize in the 1957 Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition opened an international career for her. She toured widely, such as in the Middle East with the Presidential Symphony Orchestra and in Africa with pianist Verda Erman in 1968. She taught the violin in Lausanne, Switzerland, from 1973 to 1990. İzzet Günay
İzzet Günay (born 21 August 1934) is Turkish film and stage actor. He is one of the most experienced and well-known Turkish actors with appearances in more than 100 films across six decades. Biography Günay studied at Haydarpaşa High School and Deniz High School. He worked at the İstanbul Municipal Public Works department and then in the lignite business. Günay answered a casting call in a newspaper and ended up being cast in Haldun Dormen's play ''Kara Ağaçlar Altında''. He then appeared in several other plays such as ''Sokak Kızı İrma'', and ''Pasifik Şarkısı Zafer Madalyası''. In 1959, Günay made his film debut in the Kemal Film production ''Kırık Plak'' as Zeki Müren's driver. After a number of small roles, he landed the main role in ''Varan Bir''. Tevfik Kış
Tevfik Kış (10 August 1934 – 4 September 2019 ) was a Turkish European, World and Olympic champion sports wrestler in the Light heavyweight class (87 kg) and a trainer. He won the gold medal in men's Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1960 Olympics. Born 1934 in the village of Pelitçik in the Kargı district in the Çorum Province, he began wrestling in 1956. Competing in Greco-Roman style, Kış became a gold medalist in wrestling at the 1960 Summer Olympics. He won later World and European championships. After his unsuccessful participation at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, he retired from the active sports and served then as trainer of his country's national team. Kış was a co-founder of the Turkish Wrestling Foundation and was active on its board. He was married with two children and lived in Ankara running a restaurant.
