1928 Victorian Legislative Council Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Victoria on Saturday 2 June 1928 to elect 17 of the 34 members of the state's Legislative Council. MLCs were elected using preferential voting. National Party Of Australia – Victoria
The National Party of Australia – Victoria is a political party in Victoria, which forms the state branch of the federal Nationals. Historically, it represented graziers, farmers and rural voters. However, the modern National Party no longer represents these traditional interests; shifting its focus to support the mining industry and as a result, ignoring the challenges faced by rural communities and farmers struggling with the effects of climate change and mining practices such as fracking. The Victorian Farmer's Union formed in 1914 was the precursor to the Victorian Country Party, later the Nationals. Norman Falkiner
Norman Fraser Falkiner (20 November 1872 – 11 May 1929) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ararat Ararat or in Western Armenian Ararad may refer to: Personal names * Ararat ( hy, Արարատ), a common first name for Armenian males (pronounced Ararad in Western Armenian) * Ararat or Araratian, a common family name for Armenians (pronounced A ... to grazier Frank Sadlier Falkiner and Emily Elizabeth Bazeley. He attended Geelong Grammar School and managed his father's stations at Jerilderie. In April 1901 he married Mary Louise Smithwick, with whom he had seven children. From 1915 he became a grazier of his own accord, and was a successful breeder of thoroughbred racehorses. In 1928 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as a Nationalist for Melbourne South Province, but he died in London the following year. Esmond Kiernan
Esmond Laurence Kiernan (25 December 1881 – 19 April 1967) was an Australian politician. He was born in Fitzroy to schoolteachers John Joseph Kiernan and Margaret MacDonald. He attended state schools and became a furniture retailer. He was a founding member of the Clerks' Union and joined the Labor Party in 1909. He was a follower of Henry George and an opponent of capital punishment and, from 1917 to 1920, served on Collingwood City Council. On 31 January 1917, he married Eileen Mary Harrison, with whom he had four children. In 1919, Kiernan was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Melbourne North Province. From 1929 to 1932 he was an Honorary Minister in the Hogan Labor government and, for a short period, was Minister for Sustenance. His resignation from Cabinet over a union dispute concerning termination of the Premiers' Plan saw him expelled from the Labor Party in 1932, and he served thereafter as an independent member. John Percy Jones
John Percy Jones (22 October 1872 – 12 October 1955) was an Australian politician. He was born in Hobart to coachman Thomas John Jones and Bridget Costello. From the age of eleven he worked on a sheep station at Mona Vale, travelling to Melbourne in 1888 as a butcher's boy. He worked as a cattle drover and brass polish salesman before starting a tailoring firm in 1893. On 22 December 1897 he married Mary Ann Worrall, with whom he had three children. From 1905 to 1907 he was founding president of the Victorian Socialist Party, and in 1910 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council as a Labor member for Melbourne East Province. In 1913 he was a minister without portfolio. He was an outspoken anti-conscriptionist during World War I, and he served as Minister for Public Works and Immigration and Minister for Health in 1924. Melbourne East Province
Melbourne East Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council. It was created in June 1904 when Melbourne Province was reduced in size (four members down to two), North Yarra Province and South Yarra Province were abolished. The new Melbourne East Province, Melbourne North Province, Melbourne South Province and Melbourne West Province were then created. Melbourne East was defined by the Electoral Provinces Boundaries Act 1903 (taking effect from the 1904 elections) as consisting of the following divisions: Barkly, Central Fitzroy, Central Richmond, Collingwood East, Darling, North Richmond, South Fitzroy and South Richmond. Herbert Henry Smith (29 January 1871 – 25 November 1935) was an Australian politician. He was born in St Kilda to architect Sydney William Smith and Sarah Ann Carter. Melbourne Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council (Australia). Melbourne Province was created in 1882 when Central Province was abolished in the redistribution of Provinces. Its area included central Melbourne, Carlton, Fawkner Park and Richmond. William Hearn and James Lorimer transferred from Central to Melbourne Province that year. Martin McGregor
Martin Robert McGregor (22 February 1859 – 17 August 1936) was an Australian politician. He was born in Hobart to merchant Duncan Robert McGregor and Betsy Roberts. He grew up in Melbourne, and became a public servant with the Chief Secretary's Department. After eighteen years in the public service he went to Queensland to work on the land, and ten years later became a farmer at Narracan. On 24 September 1902 he married Agnes Marshall. Gippsland Province
Gippsland Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council from November 1882 until 2006. It was based in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. Gippsland Province was created in the redistribution of provinces in 1882 when the Central and Eastern Provinces were abolished. The new Gippsland, North Central, South Yarra, North Yarra, South Eastern and Melbourne Provinces were then created. George Swinburne
George Swinburne (3 February 1861 – 4 September 1928) was an Australian engineer, politician and philanthropist. He founded the institution which later became Swinburne University of Technology.
