1927 Chilean Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Chile on 22 May 1927,Dieter Nohlen (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume II'', p262 following the resignation of President Emiliano Figueroa. The result was a victory for Interior Minister Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, who ran as an independent and received 98% of the vote. Electoral system The election was held using the absolute majority system, under which a candidate had to receive over 50% of the popular vote to be elected. Carlos Ibáñez Del Campo
General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo (; 3 November 1877 – 28 April 1960) was a Chilean Army officer and political figure. He served as President twice, first between 1927 and 1931, and then from 1952 to 1958, serving for 10 years in office. The coups of 1924 and 1925 The presidency of Arturo Alessandri saw a rise in popular discontent over an inefficient government. In 1924, the Chilean armed forces, led by General Luis Altamirano, began the ''saber-rattling'' (''ruido de sables''), a protest where soldiers banged their sabers against the floor of the Congress. Amid threats from the armed forces, Alessandri decided he could no longer govern and submitted his resignation. Although this resignation was not approved by Congress, Alessandri left the country and Altamirano established a military junta. Elías Lafertte
Elías Lafertte Gaviño (December 19, 1886 – Santiago, February 17 , 1961) was a Chilean worker in saltpeter mining and a communist politician. Lafertte ran in the 1931 and 1932 presidential elections ending in third and fifth place. He was senator from 1937 to 1953. Biography Lafertte was born in to a working-class family. He started working in a nitrate mine at the age of eleven. In 1911 he met Luis Emilio Recabarren. With him and other members of the Democrat Party, Lafertte founded the Socialist Workers' Party in June 1912, which was renamed the Communist Party of Chile in 1922. After a strike in Antofagasta in 1914 he was imprisoned for the first time. In 1917 he worked for ''La Vanguardia'' (The Vanguard) in Valparaíso. A member of the board since 1923, Lafertte Gaviño was treasurer of the ''Federación Obrera de Chile'' (FOCh) trade union from 1924 to 1926, and from 1926 its general secretary (confirmed in 1931 and 1933). Dieter Nohlen (born 6 November 1939) is a German academic and political scientist. He currently holds the position of Emeritus Professor of Political Science in the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences of the University of Heidelberg. Emiliano Figueroa
Emiliano Figueroa Larraín (; July 12, 1866 – May 15, 1931) was President of Chile from December 23, 1925 until his resignation on May 10, 1927. He also served as Acting president for a few months in 1910. Biography Figueroa was born on July 12, 1866 in Santiago, son of Francisco de Paula Figueroa Araoz and of Rosalía Larraín Echeverría. He studied in the San Ignacio School and then went on to study law at the State University. He graduated in 1889 and that same year was named secretary to the Intendant of Santiago. Figueroa decided to embark on a political career and joined the Liberal Democratic Party, which supported a stronger executive. He was elected deputy for Victoria and Melipilla in 1900 and reelected in 1903. In 1907, once his term had ended, he was selected to replace Juan José Valenzuela, deputy for Rere and Puchacay, who had died in July that year.
