Carl Friedrich Georg Spitteler (24 April 1845 – 29 December 1924) was a Swiss poet who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1919 "in special appreciation of his epic ''Olympian Spring''". His work includes both pessimistic and heroic poems. Biography Spitteler was born in Liestal. His father was an official of the government, being Federal Secretary of the Treasury from 1849 to 1856. Young Spitteler attended the gymnasium at Basel, having among his teachers philologist Wilhelm Wackernagel and historian Jacob Burckhardt. From 1863 he studied law at the University of Zurich. In 1865–1870 he studied theology in the same institution, at Heidelberg and Basel, though when a position as pastor was offered him, he felt that he must decline it. He had begun to realize his mission as an epic poet and therefore refused to work in the field for which he had prepared himself. Alphons Blasius Egli colloquially Alphons Egli (8 October 1924 – 5 August 2016) was a Swiss attorney and politician who most notably served on the Federal Council (Switzerland) between 1983 and 1987 and as President of the Swiss Confederation in 1986 for the Christian Democratic People's Party. Early life and education Alphons Blasius Egli was born 8 October 1924 in Lucerne, Switzerland, the fifth of six children, to Gotthard Egli (1884–1979), an attorney and politician, and Lea Egli (née Amrhyn). He was raised in a Catholic family on Musegg (abutting the old city walls). Two of his siblings died in early childhood. He had three surviving sisters; Lea Korner (née Egli), Elisabeth Egli and Beatrix Egli. He was educated in the local schools upon completition of primary school. Kurt Furgler (24 June 1924 – 23 July 2008) was a Swiss politician and member of the Swiss Federal Council (1972–1986). He was elected to the Federal Council of Switzerland on 8 December 1971 and handed over office on 31 December 1986. He was affiliated to the Christian Democratic People's Party of Switzerland. During his office time he held the following departments: *Federal Department of Justice and Police (1972–1982) *Federal Department of Economic Affairs (1983–1986) He was President of the Confederation three times in 1977, 1981 and 1985.
