1924 Colorado Gubernatorial Election
The 1924 Colorado gubernatorial election was held on November 4, 1924. Republican nominee Clarence Morley defeated Democratic incumbent William Ellery Sweet with 51.92% of the vote. Clarence Morley
Clarence Joseph Morley (February 9, 1869 – November 15, 1948) was the 24th Governor of Colorado from 1925 to 1927, serving one two-year term. He was a Republican. Before becoming governor he was a judge in Denver, Colorado. He was a member of the Ku Klux Klan which was an important force in Colorado politics during the 1920s and largely responsible for the division of the Republican and Democratic votes that enabled him to take office. Earl Cooley (March 27, 1880 – May 6, 1940) was the 21st Lieutenant Governor of Colorado, serving from 1921 to 1923 under Oliver Henry Shoup. He was born in Richmond, Illinois on March 27, 1880. He was married and had one child. He served in World War I in the 2nd Colorado Infantry. He had no public political office until he was elected to the office of Lieutenant Governor of Colorado. William Ellery Sweet
William Ellery Sweet (January 27, 1869 – May 9, 1942) was an American banker and politician who served as the 23rd Governor of Colorado from 1923 to 1925. Early life and career William was born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 27, 1869, to Channing and Emeroy Sweet. His family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1872 when William was two. He attended school there, and graduated from high school in 1887. After high school, he went to college in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at Swarthmore College. He graduated from Swarthmore in 1890, after three years attending, and earned his Bachelor Degree. He also excelled playing quarterback for the college football team and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. On October 19, 1892, Sweet married Joyeuse L. Fullerton in Philadelphia.
