1919 Birthday Honours (MC)
This is a list of Military Crosses (MC) awards in the 1919 Birthday Honours. The 1919 Birthday Honours were appointments by King George V to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of the British Empire. The appointments were made to celebrate the official birthday of The King, and were published in ''The London Gazette'' from 3 June to 12 August. The vast majority of the awards were related to the recently ended War, and were divided by military campaigns. A supplementary list of honours, retroactive to the King's birthday, was released in December 1919. Military Cross
The Military Cross (MC) is the third-level (second-level pre-1993) military decoration awarded to officers and (since 1993) other ranks of the British Armed Forces, and formerly awarded to officers of other Commonwealth countries. The MC is granted in recognition of "an act or acts of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy on land" to all members of the British Armed Forces of any rank. In 1979, the Queen approved a proposal that a number of awards, including the Military Cross, could be recommended posthumously. History The award was created on 28 December 1914 for commissioned officers of the substantive rank of captain or below and for warrant officers. The first 98 awards were gazetted on 1 January 1915, to 71 officers, and 27 warrant officers. Ramsay Armitage
William Robert Ramsay Armitage (April 2, 1889 – April 12, 1984) was a Canadian Anglican priest. He was Dean of New Westminster from 1929 to 1940. Armitage was educated at the University of Toronto and ordained in 1914. After a curacy at the Church of the Messiah, Toronto, he was a chaplain to the Canadian Armed Forces during World War I, 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Canada. He was awarded the Military Cross in the 1919 Birthday Honours for Bravery under fire rescuing wounded from the battlefield at Vimy Ridge, France. When peace returned he went back to his parish, becoming vicar in 1921. He stayed here until his appointment as dean. Birthday Honours
The Birthday Honours, in some Commonwealth realms, mark the reigning British monarch's official birthday by granting various individuals appointment into national or dynastic orders or the award of decorations and medals. The honours are presented by the monarch or a viceregal representative. The Birthday Honours are one of two annual honours lists, along with the New Year Honours. All royal honours are published in the relevant gazette. History Honours have been awarded with few exceptions on the sovereign's birthday since at least 1860, during the reign of Queen Victoria. There was no Birthday Honours list issued in 1876, which brought "a good deal of disappointment" and even rebuke for the Ministry of Defence. Hubert Wilkins
Sir George Hubert Wilkins MC & Bar (31 October 188830 November 1958), commonly referred to as Captain Wilkins, was an Australian polar explorer, ornithologist, pilot, soldier, geographer and photographer. He was awarded the Military Cross after he assumed command of a group of American soldiers who had lost their officers during the Battle of the Hindenburg Line, and became the only official Australian photographer from any war to receive a combat medal. He narrowly failed in an attempt to be the first to cross under the North Pole in a submarine, but was able to prove that submarines were capable of operating beneath the polar ice cap, thereby paving the way for future successful missions. The US Navy later took his ashes to the North Pole aboard the submarine USS ''Skate'' on 17 March 1959. William Ozanne
Major-General William Maingay Ozanne (15 September 1891 − 24 March 1966) was a senior British Army officer. Military career Educated at Elizabeth College, Guernsey, Ozanne later entered the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, from where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant into the Duke of Wellington's Regiment on 4 March 1911. Among his fellow graduates there were F. C. Roberts and P. H. Hansen, both of whom would later win the Victoria Cross (VC), and C. C. Malden, who would, like Ozanne, become a future general. He served on the Western Front during the First World War. Edward Stanley, Lord Stanley (politician, Born 1894)
Edward Montagu Cavendish Stanley, Lord Stanley, (9 July 1894 – 16 October 1938) was a British Conservative politician. The eldest son of the 17th Earl of Derby, he held minor political office before being appointed Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs in 1938, sitting in the cabinet alongside his brother Oliver Stanley. However, Stanley died only five months after this appointment, aged 44; his eldest son, Edward John Stanley, later succeeded to the earldom in his stead. Background and education Stanley was born in Marylebone, London, the eldest son and heir apparent of Edward Stanley, later to become 17th Earl of Derby, by Lady Alice Montagu. Ernest Marsden
Sir Ernest Marsden (19 February 1889 – 15 December 1970) was an English-New Zealand physicist. He is recognised internationally for his contributions to science while working under Ernest Rutherford, which led to the discovery of new theories on the structure of the atom. In Marsden's later work in New Zealand, he became a significant member of the scientific community, while maintaining close links to the United Kingdom. Education Born in Manchester, the son of Thomas Marsden and Phoebe Holden, Marsden lived in Rishton and attended Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Blackburn, where an inter-house trophy rewarding academic excellence ('The Marsden Merit Trophy') bears his name.
