Oliver Henry Shoup
Oliver Henry Nelson Shoup (December 13, 1869 – September 30, 1940) was the 22nd Governor of Colorado from 1919 to 1923. Early life, education, and career Oliver Shoup was born in Champaign County, Illinois on December 13, 1869, to William and Delia Shoup. His father was a Union Army soldier during the American Civil War. He lived in Illinois, until he was 13 years old, when they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1882. He attended public school and went to Colorado College. He left college in 1888 to pursue a business career. He worked for different companies before finding success in the oil industry. Shoup served as the first president of the Midwest Oil Company and the Midwest Refining Company in 1914. He also was the director for multiple banks across the state of Colorado. Politics Shoup was elected governor of Colorado on November 5, 1918, and re-elected for a second term on November 2, 1920. Clarence Thomas (born June 23, 1948) is an American jurist who serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to succeed Thurgood Marshall and has served since 1991. After Marshall, Thomas is the second African American to serve on the Court and its longest-serving member since Anthony Kennedy's retirement in 2018. Thomas was born in Pin Point, Georgia. After his father abandoned the family, he was raised by his grandfather in a poor Gullah community near Savannah. Growing up as a devout Catholic, Thomas originally intended to be a priest in the Catholic Church but was frustrated over the church's insufficient attempts to combat racism. Julius Caldeen Gunter
Julius Caldeen Gunter (October 31, 1858 – October 26, 1940) was the 21st Governor of Colorado from January 9, 1917, until his term ended on January 14, 1919. He was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to Col. Thomas M. Gunter and Marcella Jackson Gunter who died just weeks after his birth. He earned a LL.D Degree when he graduated from the University of Virginia in 1879. His first major political job was being elected to the Colorado Supreme Court which he served on between 1905 and 1907. In 1916, he entered the Colorado gubernatorial election, and was elected on November 7. The same year he entered office, the United States entered World War I. Gunter helped organize the Colorado Home Guard, the Colorado Wartime Council, and the Council of Defense which were to aid the troops. He was also the first Governor to implement the use of the National Guard. His term ended the same year the war ended. Colorado State Penitentiary (commonly abbreviated CSP) is a Level V maximum security prison in the U.S. state of Colorado. The facility is part of the state's East Cañon Complex, together with six other state correctional facilities of various security levels. Description CSP is located in Fremont County, just east of the county seat Cañon City, Colorado. It is one of 25 prisons in the Colorado Department of Corrections system, and one of seven in and around Cañon City.
