The 1914 Arkansas gubernatorial election was held on September 14, 1914. Incumbent Democratic Governor George Washington Hays won re-election to a second term, defeating Republican nominee Andrew L. George Washington Hays
George Washington Hays (September 23, 1863September 15, 1927) was an American politician who served as the 24th Governor of Arkansas from 1913 to 1917. Biography Hays was born in Camden, Arkansas. He attended public schools in Camden and worked as a farmer, store clerk and teacher Hays studied law at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, and opened his own law practice in Camden. He was married to Ida Virginia Yarborough and had 2 children. Career Hays was probate and county judge for Ouachita County, Arkansas between 1900 and 1905. Hays served as a judge with the Thirteenth Circuit Court from 1906 to 1913. When Governor Joseph Taylor Robinson resigned in 1913 to serve in the United States Senate, a special election was held and Hays was elected governor. His administration focused on road improvement and enactment of a statewide prohibition law. Arkansas ( ) is a landlocked state in the South Central United States. It is bordered by Missouri to the north, Tennessee and Mississippi to the east, Louisiana to the south, and Texas and Oklahoma to the west. United States gubernatorial elections were held in 1914, in 31 states, concurrent with the House and Senate elections, on November 3, 1914 (except for Arkansas and Maine, where they were held on September 14, and Georgia, where they were held on October 7). In Arizona, the governor was elected to a two-year term for the first time, having been elected to an inaugural three-year term at the first election in 1911. In Vermont, the gubernatorial election was held on the same day as federal elections for the first time, having previously been held in September.
