1909 Eastern Suburbs Season
The 1909 season was the second in which the Eastern Suburbs DRLFC competed in the New South Wales Rugby Football League competition. They finished the regular season in 4th (of 8) position, before being knocked out in the semi-final by Balmain. Players Season * Premiership round 5, Saturday 29 May 1909. 1908 Eastern Suburbs Season
The 1908 season was the first in the history of the Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club (now known as the Sydney Roosters). Eastern Suburbs competed in the inaugural match of the inaugural season, of the newly formed New South Wales Rugby Football League, reaching the final which they lost to South Sydney. They have the distinction of being the only club to have competed in every season since that time. The early years The Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football club was founded at a meeting held at the Paddington Town Hall on 24 January 1908. The meeting was chaired by Harry 'Jersey' Flegg who was named Easts first Secretary and a delegate to the NSWRL. Flegg was also appointed as the club's first captain and made a team selector. George Green (rugby League)
Edward George Green (born 17 December 1883 in Grafton, New South Wales), was a pioneer Australian Rugby League player. He is reputed to have been the first Indigenous Australian to play rugby league at first-grade level in Australia. Club career George Green played for the club sides Eastern Suburbs for four seasons between 1908–11 and North Sydney for 10 seasons between 1912–1916 and 1918–1922. A utility forward, Green made his debut playing for the Eastern Suburbs club in 1908 season, rugby league's founding year in Australia. He played in the Eastern suburbs side in 1911, the year that club won their first premiership. He moved to the North Sydney club the following year where he played for the next ten seasons. In 1916 Green captained the North Sydney club and in 1918-1919 he was Captain-coach. Glebe (rugby League Team)
The Glebe Dirty Reds are an Australian rugby league foundation club which played in the New South Wales Rugby Football League's Sydney premiership, the major competition for the sport in Sydney, from 1908 until their exit at the end of 1929. They were formed on 9 January 1908, with some sources suggesting that they may have been the first Sydney rugby league club to have been created. They were nicknamed and well known as the "Dirty Reds" due to the maroon colour of their playing jerseys. Based in Glebe, New South Wales and playing most of their home matches out of the local Wentworth Oval, Glebe remained a highly competitive team for many years. Though they came close at times, the club was never able to secure a premiership title. After struggling towards the end of the 1920s the club was eventually voted out of the premiership. Arthur Hennessy
Arthur Stephen "Ash" Hennessy (24 September 1876 – 19 September 1959) was an Australian pioneer rugby league identity. He was a seminal figure in the creation of the South Sydney Rabbitohs for whom he played and later coached. He was a state and national representative hooker/forward and was the first captain of the Australian national rugby league team. Arthur 'Wicker' Surridge (1884–1963) was a rugby league footballer in the Australian competition the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership between 1909 and 1910. Playing career An Easts rugby junior, Surridge grew up at Paddington, New South Wales and played for the Eastern Suburbs club in the 1909 NSWRFL season. A forward, Surridge was an accomplished goal kicker, playing in 9 matches for the Tricolours, including that year's semifinal loss to Balmain in which he was a try scorer. Edward James Griffiths (1891-1980) was an Australian fire fighter, veteran of the Gallipoli campaign and a three-time premiership-winning rugby league player with the Eastern Suburbs club. Career and war service Born in Pyrmont, New South Wales in 1891, Eddie Griffiths joined the fire service as a Brigades Cadet Corp at just sixteen years of age and his exploits since that time are legendary. Thomas Fraser Bruce (1885–1917) was a pioneer Australian rugby league footballer in the New South Wales Rugby League competition and an Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) officer who fell in World War I at the Battle of Passchendale.
