The 1909 Army Cadets football team represented the United States Military Academy in the 1909 college football season. In their second season under head coach Harry Nelly, the Cadets compiled a record, shut out two of their five opponents, and outscored all opponents by a combined total of 57 to 32. He served as the head football coach at the United States Military Academy from 1908 to 1910, compiling a record of 15–5–2. Nelly was born on January 1, 1878, in West Virginia. Daniel Pullen
Daniel Dee Pullen (April 27, 1885 – September 22, 1923) was an American football player and an officer in the United States Army. Biography Pullen was born in La Push, Washington, the second of four children and oldest of three sons born to Harriet (née Smith; 1860–1947) and Daniel Webster Pullen. The family moved to Skagway, Alaska in 1897 after the death of the elder Daniel Pullen. He attended the University of Washington, where he played college football. He then enrolled in the United States Military Academy where he gained fame as a tackle for the Army Black Knights football team. He was selected as a first-team All-American in 1906 by the ''New York World'' (chosen by Robert W. Edgren), and in 1908 by T. A. Dwight Jones, Fielding H. Yost, and the ''Kansas City Journal''. The Plain (West Point)
The Plain is the parade field at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. The flat terrain of the Plain is in contrast to the varied and hilly terrain of the remainder of the campus. The Plain rises approximately above the Hudson River and has been the site of the longest continually occupied U.S. Army garrison in America since 1778. In its early years, the entire academy was located on the Plain and it was used for varying activities ranging from drill and mounted cavalry maneuvers to an encampment site for summer training to a sports venue. 1909 College Football Season
The 1909 college football season was the first for the 3-point field goal, which had previously been worth 4 points. The season ran from Saturday, September 25, until Thanksgiving Day, November 25, although a few games were played on the week before. The 1909 season was also one of the most dangerous in the history of college football. The third annual survey by the ''Chicago Tribune'' at season's end showed that 10 college players had been killed and 38 seriously injured in 1909, up from six fatalities and 14 maimings in 1908. Schools in the Midwest competed in the Western Conference consisting of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin and Chicago. 1909 Yale Bulldogs Football Team
The 1909 Yale Bulldogs football team was an American football team that represented Yale University as an independent during the 1909 college football season. The team finished with a 10–0 record, shut out every opponent, and outscored them by a total of 209 to 0. Howard Jones was the team's head coach, and Ted Coy was the team captain. There was no contemporaneous system in 1909 for determining a national champion. However, Yale was retroactively named as the national champion by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, Houlgate System, National Championship Foundation, and Parke H. Davis. Six Yale players were selected as consensus first-team players on the 1909 All-America team. The 1909 College Football All-America team is composed of college football players who were selected as All-Americans for the 1909 college football season. The only selector for the 1909 season who has been recognized as "official" by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is Walter Camp.
