1907 Army Cadets Football Team
The 1907 Army Cadets football team represented the United States Military Academy in the 1907 college football season. In their second season (first full season) under head coach Henry Smither, the Cadets compiled a record, shut out six of their nine opponents, and outscored all opponents by a combined total of 125 to 24. The team's only two losses were to Cornell and to Navy in the annual Army–Navy Game. Two Army players were honored by either Walter Camp (WC) or Caspar Whitney (CW) on the All-America team. Henry Smither
Henry Carpenter Smither (July 28, 1873 – July 13, 1930) was a United States Army officer and American football coach. He served as the head football coach at the United States Military Academy from 1906 to 1907, compiling a record of 7–2–1. Smither was born on July 28, 1873, at Fort Sill and was the son General Robert Gano Smither. He attended schools in Burlington, Iowa, and graduated from West Point in 1897. Smither was a commanding officer during the Spanish–American War and the Philippine–American War. During World War I, he served as an adjutant to Peyton C. March, the Chief of Staff of the United States Army. Smither was promoted to brigadier general in 1925. The 1907 Syracuse Orangemen football team represented Syracuse University during the 1907 college football season. The head coach was Frank "Buck" O'Neill, coaching his second season with the Orangemen. This was the first year the team played their home games at the on-campus Archbold Stadium. The 1907 Yale Bulldogs football team was an American football team that represented Yale University as an independent during the 1907 college football season. The team finished with a 9–0–1 record, shut out nine of ten opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 208 to 10. William F. Knox was the head coach, and Lucius Horatio Bigelow was the team captain. There was no contemporaneous system in 1907 for determining a national champion. William Erwin (American Football)
William Walter Erwin (April 6, 1884 – March 28, 1953) was an American football player and United States Army officer. He played for the Army football team and was selected as a consensus first-team guard on the 1907 College Football All-America Team. Biography Erwin was born in Kansas on April 6, 1884. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. The Plain (West Point)
The Plain is the parade field at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. The flat terrain of the Plain is in contrast to the varied and hilly terrain of the remainder of the campus. The Plain rises approximately above the Hudson River and has been the site of the longest continually occupied U.S. Army garrison in America since 1778. In its early years, the entire academy was located on the Plain and it was used for varying activities ranging from drill and mounted cavalry maneuvers to an encampment site for summer training to a sports venue.
