Segundo De Chomón
Segundo Víctor Aurelio Chomón y Ruiz (also Chomont or Chaumont ; 17 October 1871 – 2 May 1929) was a pioneering Spanish film director, cinematographer and screenwriter. He produced many short films in France while working for Pathé, Pathé Frères and has been compared to Georges Méliès, due to his frequent camera tricks and optical illusions. He is regarded as the most significant Spanish silent film director in an international context. Biography Born in Aragon (Spain), Segundo de Chomón reportedly got into film through the efforts of his French actress wife, Julienne Mathieu, who appeared in early Pathé-Frères, Pathé Frères productions and worked in some special effects Parisian workshops like Élisabeth and Berthe Thuillier, Thuillier's studio. Charles Tait (film Director)
Charles Tait (15 November 1868 – 27 June 1933) was an Australian concert, film and theatrical entrepreneur. His most notable achievement was as the director and writer of ''The Story of the Kelly Gang'' regarded as the world's first feature-length film. The film was first shown on 26 December 1906. Tait was born in Castlemaine, Victoria, the son of John Turnbull Tait (1830–1902), a tailor from Scalloway, Shetland Islands, Scotland, and his English wife Sarah, née Leeming. John Tait migrated to Victoria in 1862 and settled at Castlemaine where he married Sarah. They had nine children: including Charles (1868–1933), John Henry (1871–1955), James Nevin (1876–1961), Edward Joseph (1878–1947) and Frank Samuel (1883–1965) (later Sir Frank). In about 1879, the Taits moved to Richmond, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. On 21 June 1899 Charles married Elizabeth Jane Veitch; and they were to have two daughters and two sons. ''The Scheming Gambler's Paradise'' () is a 1905 French short silent film by Georges Méliès. It was sold by Méliès's Star Film Company and is numbered 784–785 in its catalogues. Plot In an opulent room, a crowd is playing at a gambling table. Suddenly a servant rushes in to warn them that the police are about to raid their gambling den. In a few moments, in a flurry of moving panels, the gamblers disguise the whole room as a millinery, with the women posing as hat makers and the men hiding just outside. The raiding police come in, are astonished to find no gambling den, and apologize profusely for disturbing the "milliners". As soon as the police leave, the room is changed back into a gambling den and the games resume. All is going well when the servant rushes in to announce a much bigger raid. Gaston Velle
Gaston Velle (1868–1953) was a French silent film director and pioneer of special effects, who was prominent in early French and Italian cinema during the first two decades of the 20th century. Like his father, the Hungarian entertainer Joseph "Professor" Velle, Gaston began his career as a travelling magician, before putting his illusionist skills to work in cinema and ultimately creating more than fifty films between 1903 and 1911. He worked under Auguste and Louis Lumière, before serving as the head of production for the Italian film studio Cines. But he is best remembered for his work at Pathé, where he was hired to produce trick films that might rival those of his contemporary, Georges Méliès, including classic shorts like Burglars at Work (1904). ''The '?' Motorist'' is a 1906 British silent comedy trick film, commonly called "The Mad Motorist" or "Questionmark Motorist" and directed by Walter R. Booth. Released in October 1906, the film is "one of the last films that W.R. Booth made for the producer-inventor R.W. Paul," and, according to Michael Brooke of BFI Screenonline, "looks forward to the more elaborate fantasies that Booth would make for Charles Urban between 1907 and 1911, as well as drawing on a wide range of the visual tricks that Booth had developed over the preceding half-decade." ''L'Alchimiste Parafaragaramus ou la Cornue infernale'', released in the United States as ''The Mysterious Retort'' and in Britain as ''The Alchemist and the Demon'', is a 1906 French silent trick film directed by Georges Méliès. It was released by Méliès's Star Film Company and is numbered 874–876 in its catalogues. Plot In a laboratory, an alchemist is working with a large retort on a stove. After consulting a book, he falls asleep in a chair near the retort. As he sleeps, a giant snake comes out of the stove and transforms into a jester, who wakes the alchemist and forces him to look in a hand-mirror. When the alchemist does so, the retort grows much larger, the alchemist falls back to sleep, and a giant spider with a human face appears inside the retort. The spider dissolves into a young woman sprinkling coins onto the ground. Sparks escape from the retort and transform into a ghost. The alchemist wakes in terror, and the giant retort explodes. The film is an updated comedic adaptation of the Faust legend, borrowing elements from two stage ''féerie'' spectaculars: ''Les Pilules du diable'' (1839), a classic stage fantasy with knockabout comedy, and ''Les Quatre Cents Coups du diable'' (1905), a satirical update of ''Les Pilules du diable'' to which Méliès had contributed two sequences, one of which he incorporated into the present film. In addition to directing and acting in it, Méliès supervised all aspects of the film's design and trick effect work, including extensive use of stage machinery, in his lavishly individual style, which was already unusual in the mass production-dominated French film industry.
