1905 was a political hardcore punk band from Washington, D.C., formed in 2000. The band featured dual male and female vocals, their music drew inspiration from a combination of early 1980s UK anarcho-punk bands such as Crass, Zounds, The Mob as well as folk and hardcore punk. The band has been cited as a major influence on several bands including Defiance, Ohio and modern screamo acts like I Would Set Myself on Fire for You and post-hardcore band Pygmylush, among others. Hardcore punk (also known as simply hardcore) is a punk rock music genre and subculture that originated in the late 1970s. It is generally faster, harder, and more aggressive than other forms of punk rock. Its roots can be traced to earlier punk scenes in San Francisco and Southern California which arose as a reaction against the still predominant hippie cultural climate of the time. It was also inspired by Washington D.C. and New York punk rock and early proto-punk. Anarcho-punk (also known as anarchist punk or peace punk) is ideological subgenre of punk rock that promotes anarchism. Crass (band)
Crass were an English art collective and punk rock band formed in Epping, Essex in 1977, who promoted anarchism as a political ideology, a lifestylism, way of life, and a resistance movement. Crass popularised the anarcho-punk movement of the punk subculture, advocating direct action, animal rights, feminism, anti-fascism, and environmentalism. The band used and advocated a DIY ethic approach to its albums, sound collages, leaflets, and films. Crass spray-painted stencilled graffiti messages in the London Underground system and on advertising billboards, coordinated Squatting, squats and organised political action. Zounds (band)
Zounds are an English anarcho punk/post-punk band from Reading, Berkshire, England, formed in 1977. Originally they were part of the cassette culture movement, releasing material on the Fuck Off Records label, and were also involved in the squatting and free festival scene. The name of the band is derived from the old English minced oath " zounds", a contraction of "God's wounds", referring to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ, formerly used as a mildly blasphemous oath. History The band were formed around the nucleus of Steve Lake from Reading, Berkshire and evolved from a number of jamming sessions with other musicians and friends in Oxford, taking in influences from the Velvet Underground to the Sex Pistols. The Mob (British Punk Band)
The Mob is an English anarcho-punk band, formed in Yeovil, Somerset in the late 1970s. Background The band's initial line-up consisted of Mark Wilson (vocals, guitar), Curtis Youé (bass guitar) and Graham Fallows (drums). Later drummers included Adie Tompkins, Tim Hutton and Joseph Porter. The Mob disbanded in 1983 and reformed in 2011, playing a number of gigs with the original members. The first was on 8 April 2011 at The Fleece in Bristol and later in the year, The Levellers' Beautiful Days Festival in Devon on 20 August. North American shows followed in October 2012, and various European gigs in 2012/13. Their first new release in almost 30 years was the single Rise Up! in August 2013. Defiance, Ohio is a folk punk band from Columbus, Ohio, named after the town of Defiance, Ohio, in far northwest Ohio, near Toledo. The band features a violin, cello, and double bass. I Would Set Myself on Fire for You was an American experimental screamo band from Atlanta that formed in 2001 and broke up for unknown reasons in 2007. The band released two albums on Stickfigure Records, in between several demos sold at concerts during the time they were together. Another 7" record, which the band announced to "be released in the near future" was initially supposed to be released on Delian League Records but couldn't be released due to damaged test pressings. The two songs were finally released in 2012 as a download on the band's Bandcamp site. The band featured instruments including viola, acoustic guitar, cello, synthesizer, saxophone, trumpet, and hand drums in their songs. Pygmy Lush (sometimes spelled as one word) is a band from Sterling, Virginia formed by ex-Pg. 99 members Mike and Chris Taylor and Johnny Ward. Other members include Mike Widman and Eric Kane, and previous associated acts include Malady, Mannequin, and Hissing Choir, amongst many others. In 2007, they released an album of previously and newly recorded material on Robotic Empire entitled ''Bitter River''. The songs alternate between two general styles, noise punk and acoustic folk, described by one reviewer as "ramshackle trashy punk rave-ups between beer-soaked bouts of twisted folk”.'' Exotic Fever Records is an independent record label founded by Bonnie Schlegel in 2000 in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
