1904 Tour De France
The 1904 Tour de France was the second Tour de France, held from 2 to 24 July. With a route similar to its previous edition, 1903 Tour de France winner Maurice Garin seemed to have repeated his win by a small margin over Lucien Pothier, while Hippolyte Aucouturier won four of the six stages. But the race became a victim of its own success, plagued by scandals; cyclists were accused of having taken trains during the race. Twelve cyclists, including the first four of the final classification and all stage winners, were disqualified by the Union Vélocipédique Française (UVF). Henri Cornet, originally the fifth-place finisher, was awarded the victory four months after the race. The problems caused the Tour de France to be provisionally cancelled, and subsequently the 1905 Tour de France was run with different rules from the 1903 and 1904 editions. Henri Cornet
Henri Cornet (born Henri Jardry; 4 August 1884 – 18 March 1941) was a French cycle sport, cyclist who won the 1904 Tour de France. Then he was adopted by his stepfather, who gave him the name Jardry. It is not known why he changed his name from Henri Jardry to Henri Cornet. He was a talented amateur—he won Paris-Honfleur in 1903—but little known beyond northern France and in Belgium when he entered the second Tour de France in 1904. It was his first year as a professional. The organizer, Henri Desgrange, promoted his unknown competitors to readers of ''L'Auto'', the newspaper he edited, by giving them nicknames. Giovanni Gerbi
Giovanni Gerbi (20 May 1885 – 6 May 1955) was an Italian road racing cyclist. He was nicknamed the "red devil", due to his red jersey and his "never-say-die" attitude. In 1905, he won the first Giro di Lombardia. In 1911, he finished third in the Giro d'Italia. He held the world "6 hours" record in 1913 with 208.161 km. Between 1921 and 1925, he did not race. He began racing again in 1926. Failing to get a single result, he retired from racing. In 1932, he took part in the Italian Championships for veterans, which he won. He repeated this performance in 1933. Gerbi died in Asti in 1955.
