The Republican Party, also referred to as the GOP ("Grand Old Party"), is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States. The GOP was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery activists who opposed the Kansas–Nebraska Act, which allowed for the potential expansion of chattel slavery into the western territories. Since Ronald Reagan's presidency in the 1980s, conservatism has been the dominant ideology of the GOP. It has been the main political rival of the Democratic Party since the mid-1850s. Connecticut () is the southernmost state in the New England region of the Northeastern United States. It is bordered by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, New York to the west, and Long Island Sound to the south. Its capital is Hartford and its most populous city is Bridgeport. Historically the state is part of New England as well as the tri-state area with New York and New Jersey. The state is named for the Connecticut River which approximately bisects the state. The word "Connecticut" is derived from various anglicized spellings of "Quinnetuket”, a Mohegan-Pequot word for "long tidal river". United States gubernatorial elections were held in 1900, in 34 states, concurrent with the House, Senate elections and presidential election, on November 6, 1900 (except in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Vermont, which held early elections). Alabama held its last gubernatorial election in August, while Rhode Island held its last in April. In both cases the next gubernatorial election would be held on the same day as federal elections: in Alabama in 1902 and in Rhode Island in 1901. There was a change in Alabama's governorships in 1902, when governors served four-year terms instead of two-year terms. In Florida, the gubernatorial election was held on the same day as federal elections, having been held in October since 1892.
