18th Cook Islands Parliament
The 18th Cook Islands Parliament is the current term of the Parliament of the Cook Islands. Its composition was determined by the 2022 Cook Islands general election, 2022 elections on 1 August 2022. The opening of parliament was delayed by over 7 months due to petitions over the election results. The 18th parliament finally opened on 21 March 2023. Avarua
Avarua (meaning "Two Harbours" in Cook Islands Māori) is a town and district in the north of the island of Rarotonga, and is the national Capital city, capital of the Cook Islands. The town is served by Rarotonga International Airport (IATA Airport Code: RAR) and Avatiu Harbour. The population of Avarua District is 4,906 (census of 2016). Charles III
Charles III (Charles Philip Arthur George; born 14 November 1948) is King of the United Kingdom and the 14 other Commonwealth realms. Democratic Party (Cook Islands)
The Democratic Party (also known for a time as the Democratic Alliance Party) is a political party in the Cook Islands. As a result of the 2022 Cook Islands general election, 2022 Cook Islands election, it is currently in opposition, holding five seats in the Parliament of the Cook Islands, Cook Islands Parliament. An independent politician or non-affiliated politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or Bureaucracy, bureaucratic association. Robert Tapaitau
Robert Taimoe Tapaitau (born 10 March 1974) is a former Cook Islands politician, Cabinet Minister, and Deputy Prime Minister of the Cook Islands who was convicted of fraud and jailed in 2024. He is the son of former Democratic party cabinet minister Tepure Tapaitau. Tapaitau was born on Rarotonga and educated at Avarua School and Tereora College. He has previously lived in Australia and worked as a builder. He was first elected in the seat of Penrhyn at the 2018 election. Following the election he decided to back the Cook Islands Party government of Henry Puna, and was appointed to Cabinet as Minister of Infrastructure, Environmental Services, Transport, and Outer Islands Special Projects. Albert Nicholas (politician, Born 1971)
Albert Taaviri Kaitara Nicholas (born 2 September 1971) is a Cook Islands politician and former Cabinet Minister. He is a member of the Cook Islands Party. He is the son of former MP Albert (Peto) Nicholas. Nicholas was born on Rarotonga and educated at Avarua School and Tereora College. He worked as a public servant for Customs before becoming self-employed. He first elected to parliament in the 2014 election as a representative of the Democratic Party. He represents the seat of Avatiu–Ruatonga–Palmerston. In March 2015, Nicholas switched his support to the government of Henry Puna in exchange for a cabinet post as Minister of Internal Affairs, Youth and Sport, the Ombudsman, and the Punanga Nui market. Tuakeu Tangatapoto
Tuakeu Tangatapoto (born 4 February 1970) is a Cook Islands politician and member of the Cook Islands Parliament. He is a member of the Cook Islands Party. Tangatapoto is from Mangaia and was educated at Mitiaro School, Tereora College, and the University of the South Pacific. He worked as a government builder, acting Island secretary for Mitiaro, and as chief executive of Mitiaro's island government. He contested the seat of Mitiaro in the 2014 election, and gained an exact tie with his rival Tangata Vavia. The tie was confirmed by a recount, and a by-election called, but the count was delayed by a court order. The court found that one person had voted illegally in the general election, and as a result Vavia was declared the winner and the by-election votes discarded without being counted. Cook Islands Party
The Cook Islands Party is a nationalist political party in the Cook Islands. It was the first political party founded in the Cook Islands, and one of the two major parties of the islands' politics since 1965. From 1999 until 2005 it sometimes participated in coalition governments. In the 2006 elections, it came runner-up and largest opposition party in the islands. The party won both the 2010 and 2014 elections and currently forms the government. As a result of the 2018 elections, it is the second largest party in the Cook Islands Parliament. The ''Cook Islands News'' is a daily newspaper published in Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. It is the national newspaper of the Cook Islands.
