The 1899 Stanford football team represented Stanford University in the 1899 college football season. With a 2–5–2 record in head coach Burr Chamberlain's only season at the school, the Stanford football team lost as many games in 1899 as they had in the previous four seasons combined and produced the first losing season in school history. Burr Chamberlain
Burr Clark "B. C." Chamberlain (August 21, 1877 – November 11, 1933) was an American college football player and coach. He played college football at Yale University from 1896 to 1898 at the center and tackle positions. Three times he was an All-American. Chamberlain served as the head football for one season at Stanford University in 1899 and for a season at the United States Naval Academy in 1903 season, compiling a career head coaching record of 6–12–3. He also coached football at the United States Military Academy, the University of Virginia, and his alma mater, Yale. Chamberlain was born on August 21, 1877, in Dalton, Massachusetts. The 1899 college football season had no clear-cut champion, with the ''Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book'' listing Harvard and Princeton as having been selected national champions. Chicago, Kansas, and Sewanee went undefeated. The 1899 California Golden Bears football team was an American football team that represented the University of California, Berkeley during the 1899 college football season. The team competed as an independent under head coach Garrett Cochran and compiled a record of 7–1–1. For just the second time in history, an eastern team traveled to the Pacific coast. Carlisle defeated California by a score of 2–0. The news reported the contest as the first matchup of East and West, but was pre-dated by the 1894 Chicago vs. Stanford football game.
