The 1897 Paris–Roubaix was the second edition of the Paris–Roubaix, a classic one-day cycle race in France. The single day event was held on 18 April 1897 and stretched from Paris to its end in a velodrome in Roubaix. The winner was Maurice Garin, an Italian who lived in France. Maurice Garin
Maurice-François Garin (; 3 March 1871 – 19 February 1957) was an Italian-French road bicycle racer best known for winning the inaugural Tour de France in 1903, and for being stripped of his title in the second Tour in 1904 along with eight others, for cheating. He was of Italian origin but adopted French nationality on 21 December 1901. Family life Garin was born the son of Maurice-Clément Garin and Maria Teresa Ozello in Arvier, in the French-speaking Aosta Valley in north-west Italy, close to the French border. The name Garin was the most common in the native village of Maurice, called "Chez-les-Garin", belonging to five of the seven families. Roubaix ( , ; ; ; ) is a city in northern France, located in the Lille metropolitan area on the Belgian border.
