1891 Minnesota Golden Gophers Football Team
The 1891 Minnesota Golden Gophers football team represented the University of Minnesota as an independent in the 1891 college football season. It was the only season under head coach Edward Moulton and it saw Minnesota's first out-of-state trip with a pair of games in Iowa. The first of these games was against Iowa College and ended in a 12–12 tie. The second game was Minnesota's first meeting with long-time rival Iowa and resulted in an 42–4 Minnesota victory. Edward Moulton
Edward W. "Dad" Moulton (1849 – July 19, 1922) was an American sprinter, athletic trainer, and coach. He was a professional sprinter who won more than 300 races and was regarded as the American sprinting champion from 1872 to 1878. Moulton later worked as a trainer of sprinters, wrestlers, boxers, and bicyclists. He trained many well-known track and field athletes from the 1880s through the 1910s, including the original "world's fastest human," Al Tharnish, and Olympic medalists Alvin Kraenzlein (four gold medals in 1900), Charlie Paddock (two gold medals and one silver in 1920), Morris Kirksey (one gold and one silver in 1920), George Horine (bronze medal in 1912), and Feg Murray (bronze medal in 1920). The 1891 college football season was the season of American football played among colleges and universities in the United States during the 1891–92 academic year. The 1891 Yale Bulldogs football team, led by head coach Walter Camp, compiled a perfect 13–0 record, outscored opponents by a total of 488 to 0, and has been recognized as the national champion by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, Houlgate System, National Championship Foundation, and Parke H. The Minnesota–Wisconsin football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Minnesota Golden Gophers and Wisconsin Badgers. It is the most-played rivalry in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, with 132 meetings between the two teams. The 1891 Iowa Hawkeyes football team represented the University of Iowa during the 1891 college football season. It ended in controversy. Following victories over and Nebraska, and losses to Minnesota and Iowa College, the Hawkeyes were 2–2 heading into their final game against Kansas in Kansas City, Missouri. Following an argument where Kansas argued that Iowa had not put the ball into play fairly, the Jayhawks left the field claiming a 14–12 victory.
