1889 Cardiff County Borough Council Election
The 1889 Cardiff County Borough Council election was held on Friday 1 November 1889 to elect councillors to Cardiff County Borough Council in Cardiff, Wales. These were the first all-Cardiff elections since the creation of the county borough. The previous full elections were to Cardiff Town Council in November 1888. Background Cardiff had become a county borough on 1 April 1889 as a result of the Local Government Act 1888. With its municipal year running from November, the November 1889 elections were the first all-Cardiff elections in the town since becoming a county borough. Not all council seats were up for election, because councillors stood down for election in rotation. The next all-Cardiff election took place on 1 November 1890. Cardiff County Borough Council
Cardiff County Borough Council, known as Cardiff City Council after Cardiff achieved city status in 1905, was the elected local authority that administered the town (later city) and county borough of Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales between 1889 and 1974. The county borough council was replaced in 1974 by a district council, covering part of South Glamorgan and also known as Cardiff City Council. 1888 Cardiff Town Council Election
The 1888 Cardiff Town Council election was held on Thursday 1 November 1888 to elect councillors to Cardiff Town Council in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales. They took place on the same day as other local elections in Wales and England. These were to be the last all-Cardiff elections before the creation of the county borough in 1889. The previous elections were in November 1887. The first full elections to Cardiff County Borough Council were to take place in November 1889. The election saw the Liberals gain an extra two seats in Cardiff. Background Cardiff Town Council had been created in 1836. Elections were held annually, though not all council seats were included in each contest, because the six councillors in each ward stood down for election in three-yearly rotation. The Local Government Act 1888 (51 & 52 Vict. c. 41) was an Act of Parliament (United Kingdom), act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom which established county councils and county borough councils in England and Wales. It came into effect on 1 April 1889, except for the County of London, which came into existence on 21 March at the request of the London County Council. South (Cardiff Electoral Ward)
South was the name of an original electoral ward in the south of the town and (from 1905) city of Cardiff, Wales. It elected representatives to Cardiff Town Council, Cardiff County Borough Council and the post-1974 Cardiff City Council. The ward ceased to exist in 1983. Description and background A "South" ward was created (one of four) in Cardiff at the end of the eighteenth century, to elect constables for the town. Two wards, "North" and "South", elected councillors to the first Cardiff Borough Council, on 31 December 1835. (the wards would have related to the town's two parishes, of St John's and St Mary's).
