1861 Upper Hunter Colonial By-election
A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Upper Hunter on 15 April 1861 because of the resignation of John Robertson. Roberston had resigned as Premier on 9 January 1861 to concentrate on the passage of the Robertson Land Acts, which would open up the free selection of Crown land. The bills were passed by the Legislative Assembly on 26 March 1861, and Robertson resigned to be appointed to the Legislative Council to ensure their passage into law. Aftermath The Robertson Lands Acts became law on 18 October 1861. John Robertson resigned from the Legislative Council on 30 December 1861, and returned to the Legislative Assembly on 7 January 1862, unopposed at the 1862 Shoalhaven by-election. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. Thomas Dangar
Thomas Dangar (13 March 1808 – 13 March 1878) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born at St Neot in Cornwall to William Dangar and Judith Hooper. His obituary in The Sydney Morning Herald gives his date of birth as 13 March 1808, while his parliamentary biography gives it as 1 February 1807. His two brothers, Henry Dangar and William Danger, migrated to New South Wales and he followed them, arriving on 13 March 1825. He first worked in Sydney and then establishing a business at West Maitland in 1834. On 31 October 1832 he married Charlotte Selina Gibbons Hutchinson, who was widowed, with one son Tom who took the surname Dangar. In 1836 he became Scone's first postmaster, also establishing a local inn and store. He opened another store at Muswellbrook, but in 1860 returned to Sydney. Upper Hunter is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. The seat is currently held by Dave Layzell for the National Party after he was elected at a by-election to replace Michael Johnsen. Upper Hunter covers the entirety of Dungog Shire, Muswellbrook Shire, Upper Hunter Shire, Liverpool Plains Shire (excluding the area around Werris Creek), the northern half of Singleton Shire (including Singleton itself), northeastern Mid-Western Regional Council (including Bylong) and part of Mid-Coast Council. The Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales's lower chamber of Parliament. The current Speaker is Jonathan O'Dea, who was elected on 7 May 2019.
