The Grand National is a National Hunt horse race held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, England. First run in 1839, it is a handicap steeplechase over an official distance of about 4 miles and 2½ furlongs (), with horses jumping 30 fences over two laps.'' Tom Olliver
Thomas Olliver (1812 – 7 January 1874), born Oliver or Olivere, was a steeplechase jockey and racehorse trainer who won three Grand Nationals as a rider in the 1840s and 1850s. Olliver began riding at the age of six, not uncommon for the times, before becoming a stable lad to his uncle, one Mr Page, and later progressing into racing over obstacles, falling in his first ride at Finchley. Olliver was among the seventeen riders who participated in the first official running of the Grand National in 1839, finishing second on Seventy Four. He went on to ride in a record nineteen Nationals, a feat not equalled until 2014. His first victory came in 1842 when he piloted Gaylad. He became the first dual winning rider the following year when he rode Vanguard. The latter was later presented to Olliver as a gift, and he held the horse in such high esteem that when Vanguard died, Olliver had his hide used to make a sofa, which today is the property of Aintree racecourse. George Stevens (jockey)
George Stevens (12 June 1833, Cheltenham – 2 June 1871, Cleeve Hill) was an English jockey, famous for having the most wins in the Grand National. Stevens began his riding career at the age of 16 or 17. He rode Hardwick to victory in the Grand Annual steeple chase at Wolverhampton in 1851. Chris Green (horseman)
Chris Green (1820–1874) was a leading English steeplechase rider and trainer who won two Aintree Grand Nationals as jockey (1850 on Abd-el-Kader and 1859 on Half Caste) and trained the winning horse in another, The Lamb in 1871. He was active as a rider from around 1837 to around 1863, and as a trainer from the mid-1850s to about 1872, two years before his death. He interspersed his professional racing life with periods concentrating on his farming interests on the Norfolk–Cambridgeshire borders. His full name was Christopher Green but throughout his professional life he was referred to as Chris or Cris Green. Early life His exact date of birth is not known, but he was baptised on 16 July 1820 as Christopher Green to William and Mary Green at Upwell, close to Wisbech and the Isle of Ely in the Fenlands of the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire borders. George Ede
George Matthew Ede (22 February 1834 — 13 March 1870) was an English first-class cricketer and a Grand National winning jockey. A founding member of Hampshire County Cricket Club, he was the club's first captain from 1864 to 1869. In horse racing, he was one of the most successful amateur riders of his age, winning 306 races, including the 1868 Grand National. He was killed two years later from injuries sustained in the 1870 Grand National. Early life and education The son of Job Ede and his wife, Catherine, he was born alongside his twin brother, Edward, at Southampton in February 1834. He was educated and boarded at Abingdon School in 1851, with his brother Edward. His older brother Frederic boarded at Abingdon in 1840. He was also educated at Eton College. After completing his education, he became an agriculturalist at Northampton under Lord Spencer, before returning to Southampton. Aintree Racecourse
Aintree Racecourse is a racecourse in Aintree, Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, England, bordering the city of Liverpool. The racecourse is the venue for the Grand National steeplechase, which takes place annually in April over three days. Aintree also holds meetings in May and June (both on Friday evenings), October (Sunday), November and December (both Saturdays).
