17th Saskatchewan Legislature
The 17th Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan was elected in the Saskatchewan general election held in June 1971. The assembly sat from July 28, 1971, to May 13, 1975. The New Democratic Party (NDP) led by Allan Blakeney formed the government. The Liberal Party formed the official opposition. After Ross Thatcher's death in July 1971, David Steuart became party leader in December 1971. 1971 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1971 Saskatchewan general election was held on June 23, 1971, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. Under the leadership of Allan Blakeney, the New Democratic Party of Saskatchewan returned to power after seven years in opposition. The NDP won a majority government, increasing its share of the popular vote by over 10 percentage points. The Liberal government of Premier Ross Thatcher more or less held its share of the popular vote, but lost a significant number of seats in the legislature in part because of the continuing decline in the share of the vote won by the Progressive Conservative Party, now led by Ed Nasserden. Canora (provincial Electoral District)
Canora is a former provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, centered on the town of Canora. This constituency was created before the 2nd Saskatchewan general election in 1908. Dissolved in 1934, the district was reconstituted before the 9th Saskatchewan general election in 1938. It is now part of the constituency of Canora-Pelly. Neil Erland Byers
Neil Erland Byers (December 7, 1928 – July 3, 2020) was a Canadian educator and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Kelvington from 1969 to 1975 and Kelvington-Wadena from 1975 to 1982 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member. He was born in Fertile, Saskatchewan, the son of Newton Byers and Kathleen McDonald, and was educated there, in Frobisher, at the Moose Jaw Normal School and at the University of Saskatchewan, where he received a BEd. Byers worked as a teacher with the Department of Indian Affairs and taught school at Foam Lake. He also worked seven years for the Co-operative Hail Insurance Company of Saskatchewan as a hail adjuster. In 1952, he married Margaret Engelke. Byers ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1964 and 1967 before being elected in a 1969 by-election held after the results of the 1967 election were declared invalid. Kelvington-Wadena
Kelvington-Wadena is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada, in the east-central region. It was created in 1975 from Wadena and Kelvington. The riding was last contested in the 2020 general election, when it returned Saskatchewan Party MLA Hugh Nerlien. Humboldt was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. Located in central Saskatchewan, this constituency was one of 25 created for the 1st Saskatchewan general election in 1905. Paul Peter Mostoway
Paul Peter Mostoway (October 16, 1929 – March 19, 2012) was an educator and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Hanley from 1971 to 1975 and Saskatoon Centre from 1975 to 1982 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member. Reginald John Gross
Reginald John "Reg" Gross (born October 3, 1948) is a consultant and former political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He represented Gravelbourg from 1971 to 1975 and Morse from 1978 to 1982 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member. He was born in Vanguard, Saskatchewan, the son of Edward William Gross and Emilie T. Biesick, both natives of Germany. In 1974, he married Debbie McDonald. Gross was defeated by Jack Wiebe when he ran in the Morse provincial riding in 1975 and then defeated Wiebe in the 1978 general election.
