179th Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 179th Infantry Regiment ("Tomahawks") is an infantry regiment of the United States Army's National Guard. Currently, the 1st Battalion is the only active battalion in the regiment and is organized as a combined arms battalion under the brigade unit of action table of organization and equipment. The battalion is an organic element of the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. Lineage The unit that would become the 179th Infantry was first constituted on 2 May 1890 in the Oklahoma Volunteer Militia as the 1st Infantry Regiment. It was organized on 21 December 1895 from new and existing militia companies, with the regimental headquarters at Guthrie, Oklahoma. Infantry
Infantry, or infantryman are a type of soldier who specialize in ground combat, typically fighting dismounted. Historically the term was used to describe foot soldiers, i.e. those who march and fight on foot. Tulsa Race Massacre
The Tulsa race massacre was a two-day-long white supremacist terrorist massacre that took place in the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma, between May 31 and June 1, 1921, when mobs of white residents, some of whom had been appointed as deputies and armed by city government officials, attacked black residents and destroyed homes and businesses. The event is considered one of the worst incidents of racial violence in American history. 45th Infantry Division (United States)
The 45th Infantry Division was an infantry Division (military), division of the United States Army, most associated with the Oklahoma Army National Guard, from 1920 to 1968. Headquartered for most of its history in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the guardsmen fought in both World War II and the Korean War. Camp Bowie
Camp Bowie is a Texas Military Department training center located in west-central Texas on the southern outskirts of Brownwood. History Camp Bowie, named in honor of the Texas patriot James Bowie, was a military training facility during World War II, and was the third camp in Texas to be so named. From 1940 to 1946, it grew to be one of the largest training centers in Texas. In 1940, the war situation in Europe caused the United States Congress to determine that the time had arrived to strengthen the defense system. President Franklin D.
