168th Infantry Regiment
The 168th Infantry Regiment ("Third Iowa") is an infantry regiment of the United States Army. The 1st Battalion of the 168th Infantry is part of the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, part of the Iowa Army National Guard. History American Civil War During the Civil War the regiment was organized from independent companies in southwestern Iowa and mustered into federal service on 8 August 1861 as the 4th Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry. It was reorganized on 1 January 1864 as the 4th Iowa Veteran Infantry Regiment, and mustered out of federal service 24 July 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. Post-Civil War It was reorganized from 1868 to 1876 in Iowa as independent companies of volunteer militia, and these companies were consolidated on 18 February 1876 and 15 January 1877 to form the 3rd and 5th Infantry Regiments, respectively. 4th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment
The 4th Iowa Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 4th Iowa Infantry was organized at Council Bluffs, Iowa and mustered into Federal forces on August 8, 1861. Grenville M. Dodge was the unit's first colonel. The regiment was moved to St. Louis, where it was assigned to the Army of the Southwest; since Dodge was assigned command of the regiment's brigade, Lieutenant Colonel John Galligan took command of the regiment. The 4th Iowa fought in the Battle of Pea Ridge, where Galligan was wounded and forced to resign his commission. Following the battle, Dodge was promoted to brigadier general, while regimental adjutant J. A. Williamson was promoted to colonel. The 42nd Infantry Division (42ID) ("Rainbow") is a division (military), division of the United States Army National Guard. It was nicknamed the Rainbow Division because, during rapid mobilization for service in WWI, it was formed from 27 National Guard units from across the US.
