15th Cook Islands Parliament
The 15th Cook Islands Parliament is a previous term of the Parliament of the Cook Islands. Its composition was determined by the 2018 elections on 14 June 2018. In December 2018 the Court of Appeal ruled that Tina Browne had won the seat. * Tony Armstrong died in November 2018. A by-election for the vacant Ivirua seat was held on 21 January 2019, and was won by Agnes Armstrong. * Te-Hani Brown resigned from the Democratic party to support the government in January 2019. Parliament Of The Cook Islands
The Parliament of the Cook Islands ( rar, Pāremeta te Kuku Airani) is the legislature of the Cook Islands. Originally established under New Zealand’s United Nations mandate it became the national legislature on independence in 1965. The Parliament consists of 24 members directly elected by universal suffrage from single-seat constituencies. Members are elected for a limited term, and hold office until Parliament is dissolved (a maximum of four years). It meets in Avarua, the capital of the Cook Islands, on Rarotonga. The Cook Islands follows the Westminster system of government, and is governed by a cabinet and Prime Minister commanding a majority in Parliament. The Speaker of the House is currently Tai Tura. Tingika Elikana
Tingika Elikana (born 5 November 1961) is a Cook Islands civil servant and politician and member of the Cook Islands Parliament. He is a member of the Cook Islands Party. Elikana was born on Pukapuka and educated at Pukapuka School and Tereora College. He studied law at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand and then a Masters of Business Administration at the University of the South Pacific as well as public sector management at Massey University. He worked as a police officer, and then as a crown prosecutor, Deputy Solicitor General, and Solicitor General. From 2011 to 2018 he was Secretary for Justice. He was elected to Parliament at the 2018 Cook Islands general election. After his election, the government charted a special flight at a cost of $32,000 to collect him from the outer islands. Tamarua is a Cook Islands electoral division, with one representative in the Cook Islands Parliament. Its current representative is Tetangi Matapo, who has held the seat since winning a by-election in 2013. The electorate consists of the district of Tamarua on the island of Mangaia. Tetangi Matapo
Tetangi Matapo (born 3 October 1965) is a Cook Islands politician and member of the Cook Islands Parliament. She is a member of the Cook Islands Democratic Party. Matapo was born on Mangaia and educated at Mangaia School and Mangaia College. She studied to be a teacher at the University of the South Pacific, graduating with a Bachelor of Education and a Masters of Education. She worked as a teacher and later deputy principal at Mangaia School. She was elected to Parliament in the 2013 Tamarua by-election. In April 2013 she attended the inaugural Pacific Parliamentary Forum in Wellington, New Zealand. At the 2014 election, she lost the seat on the night to the Cook Islands Party's Tokorua Pareina, but regained it in an electoral petition. Amuri–Ureia is a Cook Islands electoral division returning one member to the Cook Islands Parliament. Its current representative is Toanui Isamaela, who has held the seat since 2010. The electorate was created in 1981, when the Constitution Amendment (No. 9) Act 1980 adjusted electorate boundaries and split the electorate of Aitutaki into three. Terepai Maoate Jnr
Terepai Maoate Jnr (born 5 December 1961), also known as Junior Maoate, is a former Cook Islands politician. He is a member of the Democratic Party and represented the constituency of Amuri–Ureia from 2004 to 2010 and again from 2018 to 2022. He is the son of former Cook Islands Prime Minister Sir Terepai Maoate. Maoate was born on Manihiki and educated at Araura Primary school, Araura College and Tereora College. He later attended Whangarei Boys College and the University of Auckland in New Zealand. He was first elected to the Cook Islands Parliament at the 2004 election. Wesley Kareroa
Wesley Kareroa (born 15 November 1967) is a Cook Islands politician and member of the Cook Islands Parliament. He is a member of the Cook Islands Democratic Party. Kareroa was born on Rarotonga and educated at Mangaia Primary School and Mangaia College. He worked as an agent for Air Rarotonga. He was first elected to Parliament in the 2014 Cook Islands general election. After the election he was reportedly offered a ministerial position by Prime Minister Henry Puna in exchange for supporting him in the House, but refused. He was re-elected in the 2018 election. William (Smiley) Heather
William Kati (Smiley) Heather (born 7 July 1958) is a Cook Islands politician and former Cabinet Minister. He represented the seat of Ruaau in the Cook Islands Parliament from 2006 to 2022 and is Deputy Leader of the Cook Islands Democratic Party. He is the older brother of Cook Islands Party MP Teariki Heather. Heather was born in Rarotonga and educated at Arorangi Primary School and Tereora College in the Cook Islands and Onslow College in Wellington, New Zealand. From 1980 to 1997 Heather played for the Cook Islands national rugby union team.
