157 Squadron (Israel)
Squadron 157, also known as Squadron in the valley is a squadron in the Israeli Air Force at the Ramat David Airbase, specialised in Electronic Warfare. History Second Lebanon War The unit was established in 2006, at the outbreak of the Second Lebanon War, from the merger of Squadron 153 and Squadron 557. The squadron participated in the Second Lebanon War. Space mission In May 2010, as part of the STS-132 mission of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, the warrior pin of Tal Ramon (son of Col. Ilan Ramon) who served in the unit was flown to the International Space Station and released into space in his name and in memory of his father, who perished as part of Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. The pin was photographed against the background of outer space . On Saturday, February 1, 2003, Space Shuttle Columbia, Space Shuttle ''Columbia'' disintegrated as it Atmospheric entry, re-entered the atmosphere over Texas and Louisiana, killing all seven astronauts on board. 2010 Mount Carmel Forest Fire
The Mount Carmel Forest Fire (Hebrew: אסון הכרמל ''Ason HaKarmel'', "The Carmel Disaster") was a deadly forest fire that started on Mount Carmel in northern Israel, just south of Haifa. The fire began at about 11:00 local time on 2 December 2010, and spread quickly, consuming much of the Mediterranean forest covering the region. With a death toll of 44, it was the deadliest civil disaster in Israeli history until the 2021 Meron stampede. Those killed included 36 Israel Prison Service members, most of them new recruits, as well as three senior police officers, among them the chief of Haifa's police, and three firefighters, among them a 16-year-old volunteer. Ilan Ramon
Ilan Ramon (; , born Ilan Wolfferman (); June 20, 1954 – February 1, 2003) was an Israeli fighter pilot and later the first Israeli astronaut. He served as a Space Shuttle payload specialist on STS-107, the fatal mission of '' Columbia'', in which he and the six other crew members were killed when the spacecraft disintegrated during re-entry. At 48, Ramon was the oldest member of the crew. He is the only foreign recipient of the United States Congressional Space Medal of Honor, which was awarded posthumously.
