14th Manitoba Legislature
The members of the 14th Manitoba Legislature were elected in the Manitoba general election held in July 1914. The legislature sat from September 15, 1914, to July 16, 1915. The Conservatives led by Rodmond Roblin formed the government. Tobias Norris of the Liberal Party was Leader of the Opposition. The Roblin government was forced to resign in 1915 after a royal commission initiated by the Lieutenant Governor found evidence of corruption in the awarding of contracts for the construction of new legislative buildings. The house was dissolved and a new election was held in August 1915. 1914 Manitoba General Election
The 1914 Manitoba general election was held on July 10, 1914 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Manitoba, Canada. The result was a fifth consecutive majority government for the Conservative Party, led by premier Rodmond Roblin. The result, however, was much closer than in the previous general elections of 1903, 1907 and 1910. Former Conservative leader Hugh John Macdonald believed that the party was hurt by its 1912 amendments to the Manitoba education code. Although Education Minister George R. Coldwell insisted the amendments were only meant to clarify existing provisions, many voters believed the Roblin government wanted to re-introduce funding for separate Roman Catholic schools. The government was also weakened by a corruption scandal involving the construction of new legislative buildings. George Malcolm (politician)
George John Huntley Malcolm (August 20, 1865–August 18, 1930) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba as a Liberal from 1909 to 1922, and was a cabinet minister in the government of Tobias Norris. Malcolm was born in Kussowlie, India, the son of British colonel George Malcolm. He was educated at King Edward VI school in Sherbourne, England, and moved to Canada in 1882. After attending the Guelph Agricultural College in Ontario for two years, he moved to Manitoba in 1885. He worked as a farmer, and served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Birtle Agricultural Society. Malcolm was also a school trustee. He was married twice: first to Janet T. Winter in 1891 and then to Adelaide G. Barnes in 1902 following the death of his first wife. Dufferin (Manitoba Provincial Electoral District)
Dufferin is a former provincial electoral division in Manitoba, Canada. It was originally created in 1879 as two divisions, Dufferin North and Dufferin South. Dufferin was consolidated into a single constituency for the 1888 provincial election, but was eliminated with the 1892 election. Dufferin returned to the electoral map for the 1903 election, and was eliminated through redistribution in 1969. Deloraine, Manitoba
Deloraine is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Deloraine – Winchester within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held town status prior to January 1, 2015. It is situated near the Turtle Mountains in the southwestern corner of the province. Located in the Westman Region, the community is south of Brandon. Deloraine originally incorporated as a village in 1904 and then as a town in 1907. Its town status was relinquished in 2015 when it amalgamated with the Rural Municipality of Winchester. Deloraine is named after a village in Roxburghshire, Scotland. History The area of Deloraine was originally home to the Assiniboine and the later the Hunkpapa, whose lives were centred around the plains bison herds. Robert Stirton Thornton
Robert Stirton Thornton (8 May 1863 – 17 September 1936) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1907 to 1910, and again from 1914 to 1922. Thornton was a Liberal, and served as a cabinet minister in the government or Tobias Norris. Thornton was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was educated at Heriots School and the University of Edinburgh, receiving medical certification from the latter institution in 1884. He moved to Canada in 1884, and received an LL.D. from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Thornton worked as a physician, serving as president of the Manitoba Medical Council (1896) and the Medical Council of Canada. He was also a horticulturalist and an active freemason, serving as Grand Master from 1900 of 1902. Dauphin (provincial Electoral District)
Dauphin is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was originally created in 1881 with the expansion of the province's western boundary, eliminated in 1886, re-established in 1892, and finally abolished in 1999. Most of its territory went to the new riding of Dauphin-Roblin, though a small amount went to the riding of Swan River. George Steel (June 3, 1858–August 20, 1940) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1899 to 1915. Steel was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of John Steel, and was educated at public schools in Lorne and Dallegles. He worked as a farmer, and resided in Glenboro, Manitoba. Churchill is a former provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was created by redistribution in 1956, and eliminated in 1999. During its existence, Churchill encompassed the northernmost region of the province, a vast and sparsely populated area with no major urban centres.
