1300 Revolution
The 1300 Revolution (; also called the 1300 Movement or Year 1300 Strikes) was a nationwide general strike in Myanmar in 1938–1939, beginning with oilfield strikes. It is named for the year it occurred: 1300 in the Myanmar calendar. The strike's length and reach united many people in Burma in solidarity against the British colonial government. It is often regarded as one of the seminal first steps towards Myanmar's Independence. Beginning of strike Prior to 1938, the British-owned Burmah Oil Company (BOC) fired staff without reason. On 8 January, oil workers in Chauk went on strike action, strike with additional grievances including the low wages, lack of medical leave and reductions in the number of religious holidays given by the BOC. The daily wage for oil workers was 7-8 paisa, pe while the British managers earned about 100 Indian rupee, rupees per day, almost 1428 times as much as the average worker. Burmese Honorifics
Burmese names () lack the serial structure of most Western names. Like other Mainland Southeast Asian people (except Vietnamese), the people of Myanmar have no customary matronymic or patronymic naming system and no tradition of surnames. Although other Mainland Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia introduced the use of surnames in early 20th century, Myanmar never introduced the use of surnames and lacks surnames in the modern day. In the culture of Myanmar, people can change their name at will, often with no government oversight, to reflect a change in the course of their lives. Also, many Myanmar names use an honorific, given at some point in life, as an integral part of the name. Traditional and Western-style names Burmese names were originally one syllable, as in the cases of U Nu and U Thant ("U" being an honorific).
