Lisu People
The Lisu people (; , ; ; ) are a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group who inhabit mountainous regions of Myanmar (Burma), southwest China, Thailand, and the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. About 730,000 Lisu live in Lijiang, Baoshan, Nujiang, Dêqên and Dehong prefectures in Yunnan Province and Sichuan Province, China. The Lisu form one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by China. In Myanmar, the Lisu are recognized as one of 135 ethnic groups and an estimated population of 600,000. Lisu live in the north of the country; Kachin State ( Putao, Myitkyina, Danai, Waingmaw, Bhamo), Shan State (Momeik, Namhsan, Lashio, Hopang, and Kokang), and southern Shan State ( Namsang, Loilem, Mongton), and Sagaing Division ( Katha and Khamti), Mandalay Division (Mogok and Pyin Oo Lwin). Lisu Language
Lisu ( Fraser alphabet: , or ; Latin: ; Lisu syllabary: ; zh, c=傈僳è¯, p=LìsùyÇ”; , ) is a tonal Tibeto-Burman language spoken in Yunnan (Southwestern China), Northern Burma (Myanmar) and Thailand and a small part of India. Along with Lipo, it is one of two languages of the Lisu people. Lisu has many dialects that originate from the country in which they live. Hua Lisu, Pai Lisu and Lu Shi Lisu dialects are spoken in China. Although they are mutually intelligible, some have many more loan words from other languages than others. The Lisu language is closely related to the Lahu and Akha languages and is also related to Burmese, Jingphaw and Yi languages. Demographics In China, the Lisu people are mostly found in Yunnan, the majority living mainly in Nujiang and Weixi, but also in Baoshan, Dehong, Dêqên, Lijiang, Lincang, Pu'er, Chuxiong, Luquan and Dali. Fraser Script
The Fraser or Old Lisu script is an constructed script, artificial abugida for the Lisu language invented around 1915 by Sara Ba Thaw, a Karen people, Karen preacher from Myanmar, and improved by the missionary James O. Fraser. It is a single-letter case, case (Unicase, unicameral) alphabet. It was also used for the Naxi language, e.g. in the 1932 Naxi Gospel of Mark, and used in the Zaiwa or Zaiwa language, Atsi language, e.g. in the 1938 Atsi Gospel of Mark. The script uses uppercase letters from the Latin script (except for the letter Q) and rotated versions thereof (except for the letters M, Q and W) to write consonants and vowels. Tonal language, Tones and nasalization are written with Roman punctuation marks, identical to those found on a typewriter. Like the Indic abugidas, the vowel is not written. Lisu (Unicode Block)
Lisu is a Unicode block containing characters of the Fraser alphabet, which is used to write the Lisu language. This alphabet (and by extension the block) consists of glyphs resembling capital letters in the basic Latin alphabet in their standard form and Transformation of text, turned. The addition of the block was subject to significant debate as to whether allocating a new block was necessary for the alphabet or if the turned letters not already in Unicode could instead be added to an existing block for the Latin script in Unicode, Latin script. However, since the Lisu letters only visually resemble their Latin counterparts and are semantically different, the former approach was ultimately taken. This block is supported by a few fonts including Noto Sans Lisu, Lisu Unicode, DejaVu Sans, Horta, Montagel, Quivira, Segoe UI (since Windows 8), and Highway Gothic (Wide, version 2.0.3). Lisu Church
Lisu Church is a Christian church of an ethnic minority of southwestern China, Myanmar, Thailand and a part of India. The Chinese government's State Administration for Religious Affairs has proposed considering Christianity the official religion of the Lisu. History Christian missionaries worked in the Lisu area from the early 20th century. The first to work among the Lisu, in the Yunnan province in China, was James O. Fraser with the China Inland Mission; he also developed the written Lisu language and the Fraser Alphabet, which has been officially adopted by the Chinese government. Reading and writing in Lisu was mainly developed by the church and, in some villages, the membership of the Christian church comprises far more than half the population. The Lisu Church has both the Holy Bible and a Christian hymn book in its own language.
