Ștefan Gheorghiu (violinist)
Ştefan Gheorghiu (23 March 1926 – 17 March 2010) was a Romanian musician, violinist and teacher, born in Galați, Romania. Early life and education At 5 he starts studying the violin and at 9 becomes student of the Royal Music Academy in Bucharest. George Enescu recommended him and his brother Valentin Gheorghiu - pianist, for a scholarship at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied the violin with Maurice Hewitt and musical harmony and counterpoint with Noel Gallon. During the war he continued studies in Bucharest with Garabet Avakian and Mihail Jora. Gheorghiu finished his studies in Moscow, attending the violin performing art masterclasses of David Oistrakh. Career Since 1946 he was appointed concert-soloist of the State Philharmonic in Bucharest, where he performed both in symphonic concerts and in violin recitals. Violin
The violin, sometimes referred to as a fiddle, is a wooden chordophone, and is the smallest, and thus highest-pitched instrument (soprano) in regular use in the violin family. George Georgescu
George Georgescu (September 12, 1887 – September 1, 1964) was a Romanian conductor. The moving force behind the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra for decades beginning shortly after World War I, a protégé of Artur Nikisch and a close associate of George Enescu, he received honors from the French and communist Romanian governments and lived to make recordings in the stereo era. Alexandru Tomescu (born 15 September 1976) is a Romanian violinist. He plays a 1702 Stradivarius known as the Elder Voicu, which is on loan from the Romanian government until 2023. Constantin Șerban
Constantin II Șerban (died 1682) was the prince of Wallachia from 1654 to 1658. He was an illegitimate son of Radu Şerban. Silvia Marcovici
Silvia Marcovici (born 30 January 1952) is a Romanian classical violinist. Born in Bacău, Romania, to a Jewish family, she studied at the Conservatory in Bucharest. Her international debut was at the age of sixteen when she performed in The Hague under Bruno Maderna. In 1969, she won the second grand prize in the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris (nobody won the first one) as well as the special prize of Rainier III, Prince of Monaco. In 1970, she was the winner of the first prize in the George Enescu Competition in Bucharest. In 1972, she was invited by Leopold Stokowski to play the Glazunov Violin Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, recorded by Decca. Angèle Dubeau
Angèle Dubeau, (born 24 March 1962) is a retired Canadian classical violinist. She has devoted a large part of her career to making classical music accessible to a wide audience and also frequently played works by contemporary composers. In October 2024, she announced that due to nerve damage in her right hand, she was no longer able to play the violin. Early life and education Dubeau was born in Saint-Norbert, Quebec, the seventh of eight children. She first studied the violin with Father Rolland Brunelle at the Joliette music camp, at Jean Cousineau's Les Petits Violons. Corina Belcea (born 1975) is a Romanian violinist who resides in Basel, Switzerland. Biography She started violin lessons at the age of six. Her teachers in Romania were Radu Bozgan and Ştefan Gheorghiu. In 1991, she took part in the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists. Yehudi Menuhin then invited her to study at the Yehudi Menuhin School. Her teacher there was Natalia Boyarskaya. She continued her studies at the Royal College of Music. Jean Périsson
Jean Périsson (6 July 1924 in Arcachon – 18 February 2019) was a French Conducting, conductor. Career A pupil of Jean Fournet, he won the first prize at the Besançon conducting competition in 1952. He was assistant to Igor Markevitch at the Salzburg Mozarteum, and was chief conductor of the Strasbourg Radio Orchestra from 1955-56. He was music director for the city of Nice from 1956-65, giving Wagner cycles (with artists from Bayreuth Festival, Bayreuth).
