Önay Alpago
Zehra Önay Alpago (born May 18, 1947) is a Turkish female jurist, politician, former government minister and academic. Private life Zehra Önay Alpago was born in Karadeniz Ereğli of Zonguldak Province, northwestern Turkey in 1947. She graduated from Ankara University, Law School in 1969. After having left the politics, she has been working as a lawyer and serving as an academic at Yeditepe University. As of end 2010, Alpago was elected into the Union of Turkish Bar Associations as a delegate of Bar of Istanbul. She is married to physician Yıldırım Alpago. She is mother of two. Politics Alpago entered politics from the 1983-established Social Democratic Populist Party (SHP), and served two terms as the first ever chairwoman of the party's district branch. She later became a member of the central executive board and vice chairperson of the SHP. Minister of State () in the former Turkish governments was a post in the cabinet between 7 August 1946 and 14 June 2011. It was legalized by the Act No. 4951 of 1946. Minister-of-State practice began by the 15th government led by Recep Peker and ended after the 60th government led Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in July 2011. The number of the state ministers was not constant. In the 1940s, there was only one minister of state, namely Abdülhalik Renda, who served in three consecutive governments. Later, the number was increased, and especially during the coalition cabinets, many ministers of state were appointed in the cabinet. Turkish women in academics refers to Turkish women who make scientific research or teach in the universities in Turkey and abroad. Background During the Ottoman Empire era women had no chance to teach in the universities except for the very last years of the empire when Committee of Union and Progress (İttihat ve Terakki Partisi) came to power. The first Turkish woman who was able to teach in Istanbul University (then known as Darülfunun) was Halide Edib (later Halide Edib Adıvar) in 1918.
