ÖVP
The Austrian People's Party ( , ÖVP ) is a Christian-democratic and liberal-conservative political party in Austria. Since January 2025, the party has been led by Christian Stocker (as an acting leader). It is currently the second-largest party in the National Council, with 51 of the 183 seats, and won 26.3% of votes cast in the 2024 legislative election. It holds seats in all nine state legislatures, and is part of government in seven, of which it leads six. The ÖVP is a member of the International Democracy Union and the European People's Party. It sits with the EPP group in the European Parliament; of Austria's 19 MEPs, 5 are members of the ÖVP. It is the second largest party in Europe by membership. 2024 Austrian Legislative Election
General election, Legislative elections were held in Austria on 29 September 2024 to elect the 28th National Council (Austria), National Council, the lower house of Austria's bicameral parliament. The election saw the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) place first, winning 28.8% of the vote and achieving the best result in the party's history. This was the first time that a far-right party won the most seats in a legislative election in Austria after World War II. The Social Democratic Party of Austria ( , SPÖ) is a social democratic political party in Austria. Founded in 1889 as the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Austria (, SDAPÖ) and later known as the Socialist Party of Austria () from 1945 until 1991, the party is the oldest extant political party in Austria. Christian Stocker
Christian Stocker (; born 20 March 1960) is an Austrian politician who has been the 29th chancellor of Austria since March 2025. A member of the People's Party (ÖVP), he has been a member of the National Council since 2019 and acting Chair of the People's Party since 5 January 2025. He had previously served as general secretary of the party from September 2022 to January 2025. On 5 January 2025 he was elected new acting party leader of the People's Party, following the resignation of Chancellor Karl Nehammer. After ruling it out before, Stocker announced the ÖVP's willingness to enter coalition talks with Herbert Kickl and the far-right FPÖ. Coalition talks between ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS previously failed in the aftermath of the 2024 Austrian legislative election. Alexander Pröll
Alexander Pröll (born 24 May 1990) is an Austrian politician serving as secretary general of the People's Party since 2025. From 2022 to 2025, he served as federal managing director of the party. Early life and career Pröll is the son of Josef Pröll, and the great-nephew of Erwin Pröll. In 2015, he opened the '' Jägerball'' alongside his girlfriend. Reinhold Lopatka (born 27 January 1960) is an Austrian politician of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) who has been serving as a member of the European Parliament since the 2024 European Parliament election in Austria. European People's Party
The European People's Party (EPP) is a European political party with Christian democracy, Christian democratic, liberal conservatism, liberal-conservative, and conservative member parties.
