Eggert Ólafsson
Eggert Ólafsson (1 December 1726 – 30 May 1768 (age 41)) was an Icelandic explorer, writer and conservator of the Icelandic language. He also worked to revive the Icelandic culture and economy. Background He was the son of a farmer from Svefneyjar in Breiðafjörður. He studied natural sciences, Classics, Grammar, Law, and Agriculture at the University of Copenhagen. He obtained a bachelor's degree from the University of Copenhagen. In 1772 he posthumously published ''Reise igiennem Island'' (Travels in Iceland), an account of the scientific and cultural survey he conducted between 1752 and 1757. The book remains a seminal work on Iceland and its people. Eggert wrote on a wide range of topics. His writing has made him known for his pro-conservation stance on the Icelandic language, which has undergone significant change since the 18th century. Hössi Ólafsson (born Höskuldur Ólafsson; 1977) is a singer, rapper, producer (music), producer, writer, and actor. He is best known as a founding member of the Icelandic rap (music), rap group, Quarashi. Professional career Hössi was born in Reykjavík, and first met future Quarashi member Sölvi Blöndal at the University of Iceland in the early 1990s. Jón Ólafsson (journalist)
Jón Ólafsson (20 March 1850 – 11 July 1916) was an Icelandic editor, journalist, and poet. He was the half-brother of Páll Ólafsson. He became a journalist in Iceland in 1868, but due to disobedience to the authorities, he had to emigrate to North America in 1872. There, a lawyer convinced him that it would be a good idea for people from Iceland to immigrate into Alaska, especially to the Island of Kodiak. Jón made a petition to President Ulysses S. Logi Ólafsson (born 14 November 1954) is an Icelandic football coach and former player. During his coaching career, he has been the manager of both the Icelandic men's and women's national team. Playing career Logi played for FH from 1972 to 1981. Managerial career Logi started his coaching career as an assistant coach for FH from 1985 to 1986. In 1987 he became the manager of Valur women's side for two seasons, before moving on to manage Víkingur men's team where he won the Icelandic Championship in 1991. Friðrik Ólafsson (26 January 1935 – 4 April 2025) was an Icelandic chess grandmaster. He was president of FIDE from 1978 to 1982. Gunnsteinn Ólafsson (born 1962) is an Icelandic conductor of orchestra, musical ensembles and opera. He is the founder of the Siglufjörður Folk Festival and the Iceland Youth Symphony Orchestra. Biography Gunnsteinn was born in Siglufjörður, but grew up in Kópavogur. He studied violin and composition at the Reykjavík College of Music, composition at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest between 1983 and 1987, and conducting and music theory at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany. He graduated in 1992. Gunnsteinn spent half a year in Italy working on music by Claudio Monteverdi.
